Great achievement!

USF Welcomes Strongest Academic Class in School History

Fall freshman profile reflects rising reputation of the University of South Florida.

TAMPA, Fla. (Sept. 1, 2015) –As the University of South Florida’s graduation rate has risen to an all-time high and the university’s reputation as a national research leader continues to soar, USF can now add another feat to its rising academic profile. The class of 2019 is the strongest academically in the history of the school.

“Balancing our priorities when higher education is rapidly changing can sometimes be challenging, but USF has risen above and beyond expectations,†said Paul Dosal, Vice Provost for Student Success. “Through well-orchestrated recruitment efforts, we are proud to welcome our strongest class ever. All data indicate that we have enrolled students who are well-positioned for success in higher education.â€

This year’s achievement continues a trend at the university. In just 15 years, the average SAT has improved from 1064 to 1223 (1806 on the three-part SAT) and the average high school GPA has increased from 3.49 to 4.08. Incoming ACT scores now stand at an impressive average of 28.

Approximately 700 freshmen are enrolled in the USF Honors College, the largest intake ever, including a growing number of high school valedictorians, salutatorians, National Merit Scholars, and Provost Scholars. This news comes on the heels of the USF’s Morsani College of Medicine enrolling the strongest entering class of medical students in the state of Florida this fall.

“Boosting our student academic profile is a phenomenal achievement, and reflects the growing reputation of USF as a world class teaching and research university,†said Ralph Wilcox, Provost and Executive Vice President. “For a university to make such impressive and sustained gains in research productivity, student enrollment, progression and completion is a remarkable feat. Our improvements over the past 15 years tell an incredible story and show that USF has truly become a nationally competitive, destination university for the best and brightest minds.â€

Gains in the academic profile could also strengthen USF’s eligibility for membership in the Association of American Universities (AAU), preeminence status within the State University System of Florida and national rankings.

Looks like it's about in-line with UCF and FSU.

I think that is the trouble with these numbers... it is tough to tell if we are improving, if there is test/gpa inflation, or if general student population is just getting better. Only reasonable way to measure would seem to be in contrast to market peers. In those regards I think our undergraduate programs are largely holding their own. Our graduate programs on the other hand I think have been taking giant strides.

I think we're getting better, but so is FSU and UCF.

Can we catch FSU in the next 10 years? We were 183 in the 2011 rankings.

We are definitely on pace to do that. We already have a lower acceptance rate, higher average gpa, and our SAT/ACT scores are almost identical. We seem to be ascending while they are treading water.
