Watched the video of Texas offense vs ND defense from 2016 the other day. There are some general similarities between Gilberts offense and what we ran last season.
Similarities
Very much uptempo, actually might be faster than what we saw last season. Everything is based off of the run game. RPO's are a staple, albeit slightly different. Vertical shots will be taken early and often.
Differences
More of a power run philosophy with guards pulling consistently. Heavy use of TE in the wing position. RPO's focus on weakside WR running a hitch, rather than bubble. Passing game has more reads and hots built in than previous.
This offense will be fun, but different. You won't see a ton of screens, although the hitch concept with the RPO serves the same purpose. The hitch sets up the vertical which will keep the boundary corners on their heels. I believe you will see QF get the ball out of his hands even faster (for better or worse) when the offense is spread out. Find the mismatch and hit it right away. The base package seems to have at least 3 reads built in to each play, allowing the offense to get on the ball quicker without looking over the sidelines for the call. I see no reason this offense won't continue to put up 40 a game. Good luck defenses.
