Construction costs are high, but this is still Florida, not California. You might as well take whatever SDSU spent and take at least 15-20% off. That would put us around $250 to $270 million.
Perhaps Michael Kelly is deciding to say "screw it" and go all out. If the dust settles and you get a big gift of some kind from JG it would be amazing, but he would probably not be the lead donor on an OCS-you need $50 to $100 million for something like that. Per online google searches he's worth around $30 million.
Now if he sues and gets his $60 million in contract money from the Raiders...he might want the tax write-off and to give a giant finger to the Glazers (who have stabbed USF in the back by donating to Tulane). That would at least get the football-only facility done.

doesn’t hurt that they have the Bowerman legacy and are backed by Nike money
There was a bowerman here in tampa who ran cross country and track with me in high school (although she ran for another school). I wonder if there's any relation, she's coaching in college now.

I loved the "All I do is Win" era - not a huge fan of that musical genre, but was awesome for the stadium. I guess we need to win for it to really make any sense though.
The problem is that we were consistently losing in that era. It was horrible to be down another TD and that stupid song played again.

We're also masters of cricket and quidditch.
That cricket link may work out! The USA is hosting the cricket world cup in 2024 with the West indies. If only we could build the ocs large enough for a cricket pitch...we'd have a billion people looking at USF potentially.

Both downtown Tampa and the area around University Mall are Opportunity Zones. If the valuation is $650 million as was suggested then he would have a taxable capital gain of close to $100 million. He could easily reinvest into a QOF, defer the taxable gain for five years, and either redevelop downtown further or try to make a play for the Mall....which I'm sure would include a stadium somewhere.
Of course the alternative would be to just donate it.

Yeah except we shouldn't overlook two of his bosses getting fired while he was the DC. Let's say the defense sucks again next year and Scott gets fired, that would still be on Shoop.
In fact, the fact that two of his most recent HCs got fired while he was DC is a major red flag. Let's hope CJS isn't the third.
Is this guy seriously the best CJS could do? Guy can't stay coaching anywhere for more than a couple of years, average recruiter, and has a track record of being DC when his HC is fired. Why not give an up-and-comer defensive position coach who can recruiter a shot at DC rather than a guy with a terrible track record?
I would suspect that at Mississippi State that his defense had something to do with it. The narrative leaves out a few things. The 2018 defense was unquestionably amazing. The 2019 defense allowed 29 points per game. The SEC isn't an easy place to coach, I will say in his defense that the 2019 opening day defense had 4 new starters and two of them were freshmen-and all of them were on the DL.

Sonny Dykes is out at SMU. Wonder if they'll elevate Jim Leavitt to HC or if his job will be at the mercy of the incoming coach. Bring him here as DC, fire Brad Scott and have CJL mentor CJS/serve as HC in waiting if CJS fails to field a satisfactory team in Year 3.
I would love to see CJL back here, but that would be immensely damaging to the program to have him as DC. You cannot have the Godfather of USF football sitting a room over from CJS on the coaching staff. It will breed enmity and resentment for both. The time to bring CJS in would have been two years ago when he was available and somewhat hot and ready. And it would have been a home run from a fundraising and program perspective even if we didn't start winning quickly.

I don’t see this as a negative thread. It’s a mildly amusing concept that a program like Miami would even want to venture down a similar path that USF chose several years ago with Michael Kelly. Especially with the desire for immediate improvement in Coral Gables.
I don’t know where the mention of Michael Kelly to UM even came from other than the Miami Herald just throwing it out there.
Michael Kelly has broadcast his plan, mind you cryptically so people don't go nuts. He has come in and incrementally fixed what he could (improvement in olympic sports, improved football future schedules, IPF) but it seems he has been given an incredibly long leash and time horizon to do so. Maybe that is what is necessary at a place like USF. Fans are typically impatient but there are few of us left with very little influence.
Kelly said at the outset back in 2018, keep calm. In other words, be patient. I imagine when he reached out to Dabo Swinney about Jeff Scott, he guaranteed 3 years with no pressure or expectations. Dabo didn’t do anything at Clemson for 3 years and I wouldn’t be shocked if Dabo said it will take at least 3 years to implement the Clemson culture. That’s the body language from Michael Kelly and Jeff Scott and company that I see.
I am not even so sure the goal of the coaching staff is to win this season. It has felt like they are just trying to get through the season to get Timmy and their players more mature and get to their recruits for next year. Those of you rooting for a change at DC are likely to be highly disappointed. I don’t see any pressure on Spencer.
I hope they can all pull it off. We are having to watch this long culture rebuild… so at this point, we might as well see it through. The admins seem to be determined not to go back to a Leavitt or Taggart culture so I hope it works or we will just become Rice.
Interesting perspective, but I think CJS is more motivated to win than you think. Winning means better recruits, being able to sell the program, to get a WINNING culture in there. That's why he consistently goes for it on 4th down, because he knows his best shot at winning is to score on every drive because his defense is swiss cheese. He's also essentially telling the team that field goals wont cut it.
He's trying to take the attitude of the 2016 team without having Quinton Flowers and Marlon Mack. I would fear to face a team like the Bulls two years from now with a junior McClain and a senior Mangham.

It would be a nice parting gift from him. We could hire a new AD and have 2.25 million to hire a new coach.
But having the President, AD, and Head Football coach positions empty all at the same time? More than a little bit concerning.
But if they hired CJL we'd probably sell 20k season tickets in 1 year.

I think anyone who participated in January 6 hates America and should go live in Somalia since they want to commit violence.
See how easy it is?

ECU has always had the fan support locally to be a perplexing never-add to any power conference. For the ACC it's likely academics holding them back but in the Big 12 they'd be drawing sell-outs every single week. UNC and Wake Forest most definitely would lose recruiting battles to a Big 12 ECU.

The floodlights can now operate in multiple colors. They were red white and blue at the national anthem but turned green at the start of the fourth quarter. It was visually gorgeous. I'm curious if it can be done all game.

Good point. CJL did figure it out here, without all the support of overseers, advisors and chiefs of staff. That may be the rare exception, not to mention an okay fit for a new D1-AA team. He figured it out enough to cost him his job.
CJL also had lower expectations at the outset, and Tampa's favorite son at his back (Lee Roy Selmon) to help sell the program. USF was not likely expected to go beyond FCS for a while but he won so much that making the move couldn't be decided it against. It also helped keep UCF off our back for several years until we were better than them.

Please with that level of spending everyone in the freaking athletics department will be Diamond, the leadership will all be Delta 360.

The Formula to win is easy.
1. Receive kick-off.
2. 20 play, 75 yard drive where we use all 40 seconds on the play clock and we score with 2 minutes or less left in the 1 quarter. Force a 3 and out.
3. Repeat. Be up 14-0 with a gassed SMU defense and cold SMU offense with 2 minutes left in the first half.
3. Unleash tricksteration and go into the half up 21-0 as the gassed SMU defense trudges off the field.
4. Kick-onside to start the second half recover. Watch the headbutted SMU defense deflate even further.
5. Score to go up 28-0 as Mangham gives CJL hallucinations of Andre Hall.
6. Pin our ears back and rush the passer over and over as SMU repeatedly attempts to get back into the game with their passing attack.
7. Keep scoring.
Eventually the clock will hit zero.

Someone here thought we were around 5-6k season ticket accounts. That's not actually true.
I asked my ticket rep before the season, and I asked this same question several years ago-we've been hovering around 10k season ticket holders for a while now. I think an OCS will boost that.

Given current situation, I would be okay if the seats were free to people donating for chairs for five years assuming we raised $300 million or so. The concessions and parking would make up for the free seats.
-
Imagine if we had hired CJS in 2016 after Taggart left. There would have been no drop-off in performance. We might even have still managed to land BJM (who was a good DC).
We are starting to see some offensive weapons develop. Mangham is this team's version of Darius Tice, except he scores a lot more option. The receivers are starting to see some production as well and look like they are dropping the ball less.
The biggest problem we have is that there is ZERO depth or production on the defense. The coaching staff needs to go out there and actually land recruits, it's okay if they don't have skills, if they're athletic and can run at their given position that's good enough.
I'm also looking forward to seeing some passing TDs in the red zone. My one beef with the comeback last week was that we took so long on that last drive because we ran it up the middle four times. When you are behind by 2 TDs, we have to throw the football. If it's an incomplete pass at least you stopped the clock, if it's complete then it's a TD.
So... do we think we'll get the OCS announcement this week?

Perhaps it is, but Athletics leadership needed to ask for the money. It's a two-way street when it comes to donations. No relationship or outreach would make it hard to have that presence. I was in school in the Big East days, so I only know what I've heard.
