  1. yeah - i asked one of the directors of the MC and he confirmed it when I was visiting. looks great- too bad im too old to enjoy it. lol
  2. MADD uses fear tactics to fiat laws on states. MADD is the reason the drinking age is 21. MADD is the reason the margin for DUI went from .15, to .12, to .10, to .08 in every state. MADD is singlehandedly ripping the rights of states to decide their own laws away from them. I agree that fighting drunk driving is a good thing, but MADD uses tactics of federalism and fear to mandate laws to states, blackmailing them into passing absurd laws in order to keep their access to federal highway funding. ummmm. thats kinda true ya'll. However, if ya'll lost a son or daughter to drunk driving.... not saying that they are right in HOW they go about things - but i understand WHY they go about things in this manner. And I don't see that changing any time soon....
  3. Its worse for Penn State too. http://cbs.sportsline.com/collegefootball/story/10153198/rss
  4. USF QB= minor problems Idaho DT = MAJOR Problems http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=2851641&campaign=rss&source=NCFHeadlines Could be worse ya'll. Could be worse.
  5. i think we need a backup quarterback. I think we need him more than we realize.
  6. Obviously you haven't spent much time with any provost from a top collegiate institution that does well in athletics. You do realize that about 20 Million folks will be watching a FREE 3 hour commercial tonight for the UNIVERSITY of FLORIDA and The UNIVERSITY of OHIO STATE. Plus, I can't recall the USF President who was around when USF approved the start of their football program...but one of the REAL seasons given was for the school to improve its overall national profile, which would help academic and research exposure for USF. Many "top" students want to be able to enjoy a "total" collegiate experience...and to many...that means strong academics, lively campus life, social clubs, and SPORTS! If you can't understand the LINK between ATHLETICS and ACADEMICS/RESEARCH...then you missed the boat. KL PS. I'll give you a small hint: Alumni that actually spend more time back on their collegiate campuses...DONATE more $$$$$$ back to the academic side of the school...than those alumni that disengage/don't visit/spend time on their own campus. Do you know what the #1 campus activity that brings back more alumni than any other event? ON-CAMPUS FOOTBALL GAMES!! Correct! This is exactly what I (and many others) have already said. If they don't get it now, I don't think they ever will... PS- it was Betty Castor who was the President when we got football...
  7. I also want to add that during football season, if the Bulls lose (hopefully that wont happen very often this season) -- I dress entirely in head to toe black to show my angst. and my students always know why.
  8. Ummm... did you read my post? Of course its not "just a shirt" geez louise people. Just the fact that it caused so much hullabaloo signals that this topic is tapping into something worth talking about.... and for the last time, its not just a shirt. Personally, I think everyone (if they havent already) should write the Oracle about this. We need to set a good example for the current students and let them know that their alums think behavior like that is unacceptable. And by the way, I teach at a Big 10 and I have Bulls stuff in my office (and wear stuff around town), but I would never wear my USF stuff to teach students. I don't want to alienate them further (I am already the out-of-place southerner).
  9. Here is what I posted. I am a proud alum (and a legacy after all) so I HAD to post something. Lets see if they print/post it... "I am also an alumna of USF (so is my father) and I really think Ms Tiberia is misguided, although well intentioned. She is young and is clearly involved with USF activities (she is a writer for the Oracle and although that might not seem like a big deal to some people out there - it does take time and dedication). With that said, I would like to point out that it is the visual that structures how we see the world. It is the little things we really take for granted that really make an impression. Things like school pride come about because of things we see and feel (memorable spaces, great experiences, sports victories) but also by things we don't see (students showing support for other institutions, apathetic student body, etc). Wearing clothing that is not your college is not just disrespectful - it helps create an ethos on campus that does not promote school pride. How important is school pride? Well, if you compare it to a larger problem like HIV in Africa or drunk driving- not so much. But when it comes to competing for the best and brightest in the state - school pride and a sense of place is essential. If you take a moment to recognize that USF is probably considered the 3rd best public institution in the state of FL (out of 11)- school pride is extremely important. From an admissions/academic perspective, USF competes with students who apply to UF, UCF, FSU, etc... Students we want to enroll usually will want to be in an environment that will help them have memorable experiences and help them get a job. School spirit and a strong alumni base is what attracts students to colleges like UF and FSU. And guess what, we wont have a strong alumni base if we cant give these kids a great experience while they are in college. Its hard to feel like you are a Bull if your fellow Bulls think its ok to walk around on campus in a Gator shirt. Its really very simple. School pride and positive college experiences = fondness of one's alma mater = support for USF after one graduates = more alumni $$$ coming in and more people at sporting events = which allows USF to compete with the likes of UF and FSU on the NATIONAL and local levels. Its not difficult. Ms Tiberia, wearing that thing does more harm than good. Its that simple. Now put that thing away till winter and promise to only wear it south of Kennedy."
