Sounds like he's doing much better http://bulls.tbo.com/bulls/MGB8F09U21E.html Tennessee Tech Player Making Steady Progress By BRETT McMURPHY bmcmurphy@tampatrib.com Published: Nov 3, 2004 TAMPA - Tennessee Tech wide receiver Drew Hixon, who was knocked unconscious and nearly died after a helmet- to-helmet injury against South Florida on Sept. 11, is flirting with danger again. This time, his father doesn't mind. ``He drives his wheelchair too fast,'' Stan Hixon said jokingly. Drew Hixon, who was in a coma for nearly a month, is talking and walking with the assistance of a walker. He continues to make steady progress and participates in three hours of rehabilitation a day at Kluge Children's Rehabilitation Center in Charlottesville, Va. Drew repeatedly tells his parents, Stan and Rebecca, he wants to return to school. He even asks if he has any football eligibility remaining, Stan said. ``Right now he's speaking at about 80 percent of his normal self,'' said Stan Hixon, the Washington Redskins' wide receivers coach. Stan said his son doesn't remember anything that happened in August and September. ``He knows he got hurt playing football, but he doesn't remember being in Tampa,'' Stan said. Drew, who was at Tampa's St. Joseph's Hospital until Oct. 5, lost 25 pounds since the injury, but has regained 7 pounds. ``He still has a long ways to go, but he's come miles and miles,'' Stan Hixon said. In addition to the brain bruise he suffered against USF, Hixon suffered a deep thigh bruise that was undetected for several weeks and hampered his walking. Stan Hixon said the doctors told him Drew could return home in four to six weeks. ``With Drew, I wouldn't be surprised if it's four weeks,'' Stan said. ``He's progressing so fast.'' A trust fund has been established to help the Hixons with medical expenses. Donations can be sent to: Kenneth Andrew Hixon, Bank of America, 8300 Greensboro Drive, Suite 500, McLean, VA 22102, Attn: Ron Moriarty. Any additional funds will go toward a scholarship at Tennessee Tech in Drew Hixon's name, Stan Hixon said.
