1. 1. USF 2. 38 - 10 3. Murray 4. Griffin 5. 425 UT Chat has a top 10 FCS defense from last year and returns all of last years starters, they should be as good, if not better than Ball States defense. USF has a new O-line and will struggle early before getting into rythym. Second quarter before USF gets things going. The UT Chat defense will start to get winded in the 3rd quarter and thats when USF will open it up. Back ups will see only limited time in the fourth quarter. I see this game playing out like McNeese State did a couple of years ago. Except we get the lead for good in the 2nd quarter instead of the 3rd.
2. Other schools of interest: 6. West Virginia 64% 12 - 11 7. Miami 51.5 17 - 16 14. Boise State 45.5% 6 - 5 16. South Florida 42.5% 17-23 27. Pittsburgh 38.7% 12 - 19 35. Connecticut 34.9% 15 - 28 38. Notre Dame 32.6% 14- 29 39. Louisville 32.3% 10 - 21 42. Cincinnati 31.4% 11 - 24 55. Rutgers 26.3% 10 - 28 57. Memphis 26.1% 6 - 17 61. Nevada 23.5% 8 -26 67. Air Force 21.9% 7 - 25 74. Syracuse 20.4% 11 - 43 76. Navy 18.5% 5 - 22 77. SMU 18.2% 6 - 27 78. Houston 17.4% 4 - 19 92. Central Florida 11.1% 3 - 24 99. Temple 8.6% 3 - 32 102. San Diego State 7.7% 3 - 36 116. Ball State 0% 0 - 30 Bold is NBE members. Rankings based on AP and AFCA polls. Included schedule, former BE teams, and teams that may join BE.
3. Interesting, when we play a team that is ranked higher than us we win 42.5% of the time. At least from 2002 - 2011. Other Florida Schools 7. Miami 51.5% 16. South Florida 42.5% 20. Florida State 41.2% (includes vacated wins) 23. Florida 40% 90. Florida Atlantic 11.7% 92. Central Florida 11% 103. Florida International 7.1% based on the AP poll or AFCA poll.
4. BYU has already said no to us and could join B12. It's a large bigwest team taht would fit nicely with our new west teams BYU also turned down the B12 before they turned down the BE. The issue with BYU is the rebroadcast rights of the first and second teir games. The conferences want BYU to yield those rights and BYU doesn't want to yield their rights on that. The most likely candidate is AFA, the current commanding general declined joining the BE because he did not see a financial gain to joining the BE. I think he was anticipating a fall in TV revenue, but a new TV contract could change that. Also I think that his rotation ends next year and a new commanding general could have a very different viewpoint. Outide of AFA I think the most likely would be either Colorado State or Nevada, Nevada brings a better program to the conference but Colorado State brings a bigger TV audience.
5. They probably won't get death penalty but they need to get hit hard. This is the third (maybe fourth) recruiting violation the last decade. It is obvious at this point that Miami does not learn from past mistakes. Perhaps they should be forced to play at the FCS level for 5 - 10 years, and then requalify for FBS. Maybe that might get the idea to the boosters, alumni, and adminstration that these violations have to stop. I'm not going to hold my breath on that one happening.
6. link: http://sports.yahoo.com/news/ncaaf--hurricanes-coach-al-golden-s-staff-used-booster-s-associate-in-potential-recruiting-violations.html Since this is Al golden's staff, not predecessor's, think USF can take advantage of this.
7. I don't think it was lack of institutional control, it was a lcak of institutional giving a darn. They showed considerable institutional control in not letting the story out.
8. Sorry, I prefer my ladies to be natural and not have as much plastic as Barbie. You do know that more implants are sold in Tampa than in LA? And that Plastic Surgeons call Hillsborough County Silicon Valley?
9. The real problem for USF is a lack of depth. The starters can play with most teams in the country but the back-ups need a lot of development. I don't think we have solved this problem yet so I expect an up and down season again.
10. If I remember correctly SDSU was the first 1-A opponent we ever played. I suspect that the next time we go out to SDSU the outcome might be a bit different. I'm hoping that we ahve a much better year this year than last. More experience on both sides of the line and we addressed a few depth issues, the lack of secondary depth last year (and bad scheming) caused them to wear down in the fourth quarter. I think that is the primary reason we blew so many late leads, the defense just wore out because the starters couldn't get rest during the game. The following week was against West Texas and talk about a difference in weather. It was nice in SD but here at home I remeber seeing the "Waterfall" in RJS. The stairs looked like a set of white water rapids and the North East upper level must have had a drain pipe clogged or the tarp was set wrong because water was going over the wall and crashing down on the seats below. I think that was the worst rainstorm we have had at a football game. Wow, does that make me sound old or what?
11. You need to understand when it comes to USF, UCF has penis envy.
12. Hey NJ girls are only big-boned (in comparison). We don't really know if they are healthier.
13. I think that the NCAA can punish PSU under eithical violations, but the death penalty requires a second violation within five years of the probation of the previous violation. So what would be PSUs first violation? Without a first violation the second violation (death penalty) rule does not come into effect.
14. 11 runs on 9 hits, that's making the most of your opportunities.
15. Another error, has FAMU scored an earned run today?
16. The Final Four is a traditional time for coaching interviews, this is the NCAA's version of a job fair. I would not be surprised if DW talks to Heath this weekend. For those wondering about Heath's history, I think that he didn't meet expectations. He took over for 2002-2003 season right after Nolan Richardson. His record for his five years: 9-19 (4-12) 12-16 (4-12) 18-12 (6-10) 22-10 (10-6) 21-14 (7-9) He also has had 3 top 25 recruiting classes. Had 7 juniors on this years team, 3 frosh and 2 soph. Scoring has improved every year, except this year when it slipped 2 points per game (went from 61 pts per game to 71 points per game).
17. The following schools have coaching vacancies. The highlighted schools are BCS conference schools. Arkansas Bowling Green Chicago State Colorado Hawaii Harvard Indiana State Iowa Kentucky Long Beach State Marshall Michigan North Dakota State Princeton Quinnipiac San Diego Santa Clara South Florida St. Bonaventure UC Riverside UMKC Utah How do you think we stack up in comparison to the schools that do have openings? I think that Kentucky and Michigan gets the pick of the pack, the Iowa and Arkansas jobs are better than ours and that we are pretty even with Colorado. Among the smaller schools only Long Beach State could compete (they did make the NCAA tournament). I don't expect a new coach to be announced until next week (Mon or Tues). It can't go much further than that since recruiting begins right after the title game.
18. The NCAA pays out to conferences based upon prior years performance, over the past six years. For this year the BE has 83 units (1 unit = 1 game, except championship) Whcih is the number of games palyed by the BE in the NCAA tourney in 2001 - 2006. In 2001 the BE played 10 games which will come out of that 83 at the end of this years tourney, dropping us to 73 plus the games played this year. If the BE does not win in the next round the games to be added is 11 so next year the BE will have 84 units. This year each unit is worth about $170,000. The NCAA will probably use a similar method for the NIT.
19. From an earlier post. This information is from the US DOE USF Men's BBall Revenue (05-06): MBB: $2,845,336 USF Men's BBall Expenses (05-06): MBB: $1,983,566 In 05-06 the USF Operating budget for Athletics ran $1.5 million in the black. believe that the money is there. In addition, we have more revenue coming in from the BE this year and the new TV money for next year.
20. My Dad is a big UVA fan (He graduated from there). So I am fasmiliar with Gillen. His biggest problem was getting over the hump at UVA. He could recruit guards and forwards but couldn't get a good center. His style of play is full court press, fast break, and in the half court he uses a weave. In the last couple of years he didn't have the players for that style. You should also note that UVA made the tourney this year with the players he recruited. Guillen also had trouble winning games in late Feburary and early March. He just couldn't quite get it done. I think he would be good for USF. He would make the team competitive but I think that he wouldn't get up into the top three in the BE. So do you want a coach that would compete for the NCAA every year but would probably never be a Final Four contender?
21. Gregg Marshall's eight years as a college head coach have produced great team success and personal recognition. He has led the Winthrop Eagles to six NCAA tournament appearances during his eight seasons, including four consecutive trips during his first four years at the helm. His 2004-05 team established new Big South Conference and school records for victories as the Eagles soared to a 27-6 record and finished the season ranked No. 9 among the nation's Div. I mid-major programs. The 2005-06 team compiled a 23-7 record and came within a basket of capturing its first victory in the NCAA tournament. Marshall has been voted the Big South Coach of the Year three times in 1999, 2003 and 2005. Under Marshall's leadership, Winthrop has had five 20-win seasons and have averaged over 20 victories per year. His career record now stands at a very impressive 165-78. During the 2005-06 season, Marshall became the winningest coach in Winthrop men's basketball history, passing Nield Gordon's mark of 161. He struck gold in his first year as the head coach at Winthrop as he led the Eagles to their first-ever Big South Conference regular season championship, the conference tournament title and the school’s first trip to the NCAA tournament. He led the Eagles to another Big South tournament title in 2000 and a second trip to the Big Dance, and then made it a three-peat in 2001 as Winthrop won the conference title in exciting fashion and advanced to the first-ever opening round game in NCAA tournament history. His 2001-02 team overcame a series of injuries to win a fourth straight conference title and earned the right to face top-ranked Duke in the NCAA tournament. In his first year as a head coach on any level, Winthrop compiled a 21-8 overall record including a 9-1 Big South Conference slate. Winthrop’s improvement of 14 victories over the 1997-98 year was one of the biggest turnarounds for NCAA Division I programs. Marshall also directed the Eagles to a school-record 12-game winning streak during January and February. He did this despite having his team picked to finish last in the conference in nearly every poll and national publication. He was rewarded by being voted the 1999 Big South Coach of the Year. In 1999-2000 the Eagles won it all again as they finished second in the regular season and then captured the Big South tournament to earn the automatic bid to the NCAA tourney. Winthrop received a No. 14 seed, the highest ever by a Big South Conference member, as the Eagles faced Oklahoma in the West Region at Tucson, AZ. Sports Illustrated 's NCAA preview even picked the Eagles to defeat the Sooners, but that didn't happen. Winthrop finished the year with a 21-9 record to give Marshall a 42-17 head coaching mark after two years. His third year was probably his best in terms of coaching skills as Winthrop was hit hard by the injury bug, but still managed to compile a 18-13 record and its third straight Big South title and trip to the Big Dance. Gregg Marshall Achievements In Eight Years At Winthrop * Led Winthrop To First Big South Conference Regular Season Championship In 1999 * Led Winthrop To First NCAA Tournament Appearance In 1999 * Led Winthrop To First back-to-back Big South Conference Tournament Titles In School History in 1999 and 2000. * Led Winthrop To First Back-To-Back NCAA Appearances In Big South Conference History in 1999 And 2000 * Led Winthrop To First Back-To-Back 20-Win Seasons Since School Became A NCAA Div. I Member In 1987 * Led Winthrop To A No. 14 Seed In The 2000 And 2005 NCAA Tournaments, The Highest-ever For A Big South Conference School. * Captured First Big South Conference Coach Of The Year Honor In 1999. * Led Winthrop To First 3-Peat in Big South Conference History with a third championship In 2001. * Led Winthrop To A 4th Straight Big South Title In 2002. * Led Winthrop To A 3rd 20-win Season And The Regular Season Big South Conference Championship In 2003. * Was voted Big South Conference Coach of the Year in 1999, 2003 And 2005. * Led Winthrop To A 4th 20-win Season And The Regular Season Big South Conference Championship In 2005. * Led Winthrop To A School And Big South Conference Record For Wins In A Season With 27 In 2004-05. * Led Winthrop to its first invitational tournament championship with a 71-64 victory over host Marquette in the 2005 Pepsi Blue and Gold Classic. * Led Winthrop to its highest ever finish in the on-line computer rankings with a high of 67 in the USA Today Sagarin Ratings. His appointment as the Eagles’ head coach in April of 1998 brought the South Carolina native full circle. After being born in Greenwood, SC, Marshall spent the first 3½ years of his life on College Avenue which is located adjacent to the Winthrop campus and just a few blocks from his office in Winthrop’s 6,100-seat coliseum. During the two years leading up to his arrival at Winthrop, Marshall served as an assistant coach at Marshall University where he helped guide the Thundering Herd to the 1997 Southern Conference championship and before that was an assistant on John Kresse’s staff at the College of Charleston for eight years from 1988-1996 when the Cougars made the most successful transition ever from NAIA to NCAA Division I. During Marshall’s years there, the Cougars received an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament in 1994 and consecutive NIT invitations in 1995 and 1996. While at Marshall, he recruited 1998 Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year Travis Young along with MAC All-Freshman team member Joda Burgess. The 1997 recruiting class at Marshall was ranked by ESPN as the best in the MAC and among the Top 40 in the nation. During his tenure at the College of Charleston, Marshall was instrumental in the recruitment of NBA-caliber student-athletes from the state of South Carolina that include Anthony Johnson, a current member of the Indiana Pacers, Marion Busby and Thaddeous Delaney. All three players were voted Trans-America Athletic Conference Players of the Year. Prior to joining Kresse’s staff in Charleston, Marshall spent one year as an assistant at Belmont Abbey College (1987-88), and two years as an assistant at his alma mater at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, VA, (1985-1987). In 13 years as an assistant coach, the schools that Marshall was associated with compiled a record of 268-129 for a success rate of 68 percent. Marshall received a B.A. degree in economics/business in 1985 from Randolph-Macon and earned the Master’s degree in Sport Management from the University of Richmond in 1987. He is married to the former Lynn Munday of Bellingham, Washington, who earned her master’s degree from the College of Charleston. They are the parents of a son, Kellen, age 8, and a daughter, Maggie, 5.
22. Maybe we should ask the Illinois AD who to hire they have been through three coaches over this time frame (prior to this year). Teams with most wins since 2001 1. Duke 2. Illinois 3. Connecticut 4. Gonzaga 5. Pittsburgh Syracuse also checks in at number 7 No wonder its so hard to win in the Big East, we've got three teams in the top ten no other conference has more than 1.
