Agree with this. Maybe he just went through a few hectic years and wants to take on less responsibility, spend time with his family, and reassess. Nothing wrong with that.

I would guess it may also have to do with the terms of his buy-out from USF. He may have offset language where if he takes an "on-field" coaching position then that salary would reduce his Buy-out payments from USF. That is complete speculation by me. I am not privy to the terms of his buy-out, but that offset language is common.

Oh I completely understand he is just trolling me and failing to bring any meaningful counterpoints to any of the arguments I have laid out refuting his narrative.

So which point was I wrong about the passing offense under CJS?

The part where you explain how any of that affects the rest of the 2022 season.

  3. Yea this has to be a record for longest post which shows absolutely nothing new. No one is disagreeing with you that our Passing Offense was terrible last year and the year before. I don't know what part of that you don't understand. But that was different players and a different OC. This is a new OC and offense with a new QB. No one is even disagreeing that statistically we had been poor so far through two games. But what we are trying to do is infer based on the play on the field so far how that is gonna to extrapolate to the rest of the 2022 season.

I define success as winning . We have an " elite offensive coach" that was a passing game coordinator,  wide receivers coach, and he cannot run a mediocre college passing attack. This should be his strength  for developing a passing offense.  I would define that as not successful when you can only pass 6 passing touchdowns in a season and win one FBS game in two seasons. If you start off a season off all this talk about GRIT score and an explosive offense with a new QB and you can't find the end zone versus HOWARD I have concerns. If you are winning games against FBS teams and having an average passing attack combed with a good to great rushing attack that would be successful.  All the stats measure offensively show the offense is actually worse under CJS than it was CCS and both of their coordinators.

You keep changing the goal posts, this is a thread about this year's 2022 passing offense, now you are talking about GRIT scores (a workout metric) and W/L record from past seasons which have nothing to do with this year's team on the field. How about we just make it simple. Since you are so confident that our passing attack is worse than it ever has been and its obvious that neither one of us is going to convince the other I propose a simple wager. 2022 USF passing offense will outperform 2018 CCS team with more than 17 TDs (even though that is a dumb metric to judge something solely on). $100 donation to the charity of the winner's choice.

ZERO passing touchdowns in 2 games and one of them being an 0-3 FCS Howard team does not scream confidence in the passing game.

Do you define success as only scoring a TD? Yards, completion %, QBR all real metrics mean nothing to you? By your logic it is impossible to have both a good running game and a good passing game since only 1 can ever result in a TD on a single drive.

I think they are forcing the ball to Weaver waaaaay to much. We I think Dollison, Atkins, Holden Willis and Sincere Brown need to get more throws.

I disagree. If your best WR is open you throw him the ball. The only pass that was a force to him was the opening INT. Other than that every other pass to him has been open. The guy is a stud and will work through the drops. Now if defenses start to key on him or double him then that opens up the opportunities to spread it around to everyone else.

No need to hate to admit it, it is not your  fault our passing attack is scoring less.

    2019 18  passing touchdowns CCS

    2020 12 passing touchdowns

    2021  6 passing touchdowns

2020 0 passing touchdowns in two games

So the trend is very concerning.

I think you are conflating several different issues into a single stat and trying to say the passing game is failing.  Not to mention that TD's are such an idiosyncratic stat to begin with. 2020, and 2021 are completely unrelated to 2022. Different players (QB particularly) and different OC. But just to play ball with you here you go:

2019 > 2020. Change entire offense and have Covid year with no Spring ball. Yes TD's are down but so are Ints and Sacks. Yards about even and QBR and completion % are both actually up comparatively.

2020 > 2021. Throwing in a True Freshman QB to the fire, whose best ability is to scramble, seems to make sense that the passing stats might decline. But even then the yards and rating are pretty even comparing back to 2019. And we doubled our running TD's to 25. Is the passing game really failing if it gets you down to the 1 yard line and then you run it in from there with Mangham?

2022 New OC and a new QB who only arrived in the Summer. It takes reps to build chemistry and practice will never be as good as game reps. I would be concerned if guys weren't getting open, or the OL wasn't giving us any time to throw,  or GB didn't have the arm to get it to our WRs (an issue we have had in the past), but none of those are the case. GB is throwing a good ball for the most part, it is just slightly off with the timing. Guys are getting schemed open on the deep ball, and maybe after hitting the last one to Dollison it will begin to click regularly. Additionally, they are attacking with the passing game in multiple other ways, with screens, pop passes, and traditional route tree. Is there a particular passing play you think we should be using in our scheme that we aren't?

Timing/chemistry on throws and drops are both pretty correctable and also fairly common this time of year. Doesn't mean they are excusable especially as the season progresses. But we have probably missed about 12 catches for 400 yards and 6 tds due to those two issues. If we fix even half of that do you feel better about the passing game all of a sudden?

If I was a betting man I'd take whoever JSU is playing and give up the points because Deion will take the best players with him, but I could be wrong which is why I don't bet.

    thats Jackson State’s problem.

worrying about Deion leaving as an excuse to not even pursue the idea is ridiculous.

even if he’s only here 3-4 years that might just be enough to generate some excitement around this program as it (hopefully) catches the next round of expansion at just about the same time.

this program needs a dynamic change & FAST.

No that's the whole point. Because investing in facilities is how you build consistency that can last beyond one coach who wins for a couple years and then leaves. It's a big part of why none of our success under Leavitt translated over to any other coach. I know we are all desperate even for a semblance of competitiveness right now, so even a sniff of 1 winning season sounds good. But ideally you are trying build "sustainable success" as Jeff Scott continues to say in every press conference, which means investing in things that last beyond 1 coach and a couple recruiting classes of players. Can you envision a future where 6-6 is the worst you do and every year you are competing for championships,? Instead of trying to lure in some unknown Coach who you have no idea if they are gonna be good at your school or not after firing your last coach or losing your last coach because they won 1 bowl and see their payday at a P5 school.

My single biggest problem with the defense is that we continue to be atrocious on 3rd downs. It feels like we've been awful on 3rd downs for like a decade now. Don't even feel safe on 3rd and longs (10 or more).

I can agree with that and getting off the field has been a problem long before the current staff. 4th and 24 against Houston still gives me nightmares. And nothing frustrates me more, especially if its a screen or draw (happened against BYU).  3rd down should be a time for the defense to get excited to make a play. I'm a big Bucs fan too (hence the name), so I remember the old Bucs defense or USF defenses just getting excited for 3rd and long because now the offense is desperate so you are more likely to get a sack or an int. I think the difference is we still lack a dominant and confident pass rusher. Hoping Logan, Hansford, or Kelly can begin to show that more in their game.

Howard was 9/17 on 3rd down overall. I went ahead and charted those 3rd downs. They were 6/9 in the first half and 3/8 in the second. 6/9 on 3rd and short(<7 yards) with 2 tds; and 3/8 on 3rd and long with two turnovers. To be transparent one of the turnovers they were going to get the first down until the guy fumbled. But the three third and long conversions were 9, 7 and 7, so not the worst performance in this particular game. And I think the starters improved as the game went on and they began to see their keys and diagnose plays.

    1. 3rd and 9 in the 2nd quarter. We blitz and they run a wr drag screen across the middle and the CB gets picked off by another route. They would run this same/similar play multiple more times in the game and we adjusted to take it away. I think it was later an incompletion and a short tackle. They would fumble on this drive.

    2. 3rd and 7 in the 3rd quarter.  We play man coverage and the wr fakes the slant and pops back outside for a quick out, just enough for the first down. . This was the same CB#2 who is converted back from safety due to CB injuries. I wouldn't blame him though the coverage was pretty tight, only way to stop this is likely get home with the pass rush. I am still definitely unsatisfied with our pass rush when we don't blitz. They would later score a td on this drive.

    3. 3rd and 7 in the 4th quarter against our 3's in defense. They run a typical zone read handoff which just completely takes our backups by surprise given the situation and they gain 27 and score their final td on this drive.

25k in a 40k stadium doesn't look good either, especially if they are losing or struggling to beat Howard, etc.

I suppose it's a chicken or the egg type of question.  You have to get the players FIRST, win the games SECOND and then eventually TV will come knocking on the door.  But don't get me wrong, with what Deion has already done I think he's an interesting possibility wherever he may decide to go.

And what do you think happens to Jackson State the minute Deion leaves?

No, Triple, I do get it.  But I really do think something is lost along the way.  Let me ask you this:  Would you feel better if the Navy Seals only practiced in an IPF?  Would you feel safer?  Would they be better prepared for the harsh environments that they have to perform in?  To do their job in?  The HEAT, the RAIN, the MUD, etc.?  I know to some extent we're in competition with other schools to have the nicest facilities, stadiums, cafeteria's etc.  But if after this past Saturday's game Coach Saban told his players they were going to practice OUTSIDE the rest of the year and he personally put a padlock on the facility and then went on to crush the competition the rest of the season, how many padlocks do you think would be sold around the country to football coaches.  If UofA crushes TA&M heck Jimbo would probably burn the place down himself (I'm kidding of course).  But think of the irony.  He left FSU because of a facilities dispute (and other things) and now APP State comes along and kicks their butt.  Does App State even have an IPF?  Anybody?  Bueller?  Bueller?

No one is implying that we would ONLY practice in the IPF. In fact there will still be two outdoor fields right next to it. Would you feel better if the Navy Seals, only got to practice outside in a field with finger pistols, instead having top of line equipment and full mock-ups of their target environment? The IPF is a great resource that allows us to be more competitive with almost every other program in the nation, and shows recruits we can make an investment in our program. It was more than just "protecting our soft players from the elements". I guess our program would be better off if we made the players play without cleats and pads too because that would toughen them up and they'd be much more certain to make sure they don't get hit if it might kill them when they do.

As an out of state student, I gave USF 10s of thousands of dollars in overpriced tuition. I loved my time there but I don't even use the degree I bought from them for my career. I enjoy watching and being a part of a winning community, not a losing one that keeps pouring money into an empty hole of poor decision making. I am happy there are people like you who will continue giving their hard earned money to them but I can't say they provide enough in return to convince most, with the exception of a few ultra grateful people, to do the same.

Yes, I would agree we probably have a different view of USF as an institution since I was an in-state Bright Futures scholarship student who had limited out of pocket expenses to attend. As close to "free" as college gets and my degree led directly to employment straight out of school in a career/industry that I am still in years later. Everyone has their own unique set of life experiences and circumstances that govern what causes they choose and can afford to give to. Personally my relationship with USF won't ever be transactional, but get that others feel differently. Just don't expect me to praise you for it. But USF is in no position to be turning away any fan or $ that they can get.

Could not disagree more with this take.  I have no sense of duty to give anything to USF including my time and money.  I do it because I want to support my alma mater and I enjoy college football.  Maybe you should focus on the other 97.5% of alumni that have zero connection to the University.  The last 2 games I attended in person were Tulane(away) last year and BYU.  Both games were over way before halftime and we lost by a combined 95-35.  I’m more than doing my part wish I could say the same about USF.

I agree that you are doing more than most and hope you continue to support going forward, but learned along time ago that comparing yourself to most others isn't really the best way to feel accomplished in life. I'm not on a mission to convert every alumni to give/support at the same level you or I do, but would encourage them to do so whenever possible and also am well aware of the cold hard reality that a better % would be engaged if we won more. My time at USF including athletics/football made me into the person I am today, so yes I personally feel a need to give back or tithe a portion of my future income/time and always will. To me that is what I owe based on the past relationship rather than present/future reward.  I get a lot of satisfaction in that, no matter what happens on the field, but obviously am always happier if we win. To each their own though.

So true.  The relationship between USF athletics and it’s fanbase has been a one way street.  Fans give  their time money and support and get next to nothing in return.  A healthy relationship is a 2 way street and for the last couple of decades save for a couple of years under Taggart USF fans have gotten squat in return.

I could not disagree with this statement more. Fans/Alumni should feel a sense of duty to give their time, money, and support no matter what with no sense of entitlement to anything. If you are lucky you get rewarded with wins and great on field memories. If not, you enjoy the community and tailgating, etc.
