  1. Happy Veterans Day to those penners who once sported alarmingly short hair and exceptionally unstylish footwear!
  2. $20 on USF courtesy of our good friends at the intersection of Hillsborough Avenue & Orient Road.
  3. Well, you know salad isn't really food. It's the promissory note that food will soon arrive. When you order a steak, they first bring you a salad - and they don't charge you for it. Why? Because it's not worth anything - it's free; it simply signals that the food is on its way. When you're asked what you'd like on your salad, just say Häagen-Dazs...melt it so it looks like ranch dressing. The wisdom of our good friend Jon Pinette
  4. I'd say it's a 'must win' if we're trying to accomplish something. For instance, being bowl eligible requires two more wins from the remaining three games, in which, we are favored in two. 'Must win' would mean doing what is expected. To lose the Temple game would be a failure. Do we recalibrate expectations? Wouldn't five wins, but missing being bowl eligible, also be a success? We'd have beaten Vegas pre-season expectations (O/U 4.5) and have more wins than in any of the previous four seasons? That's progress! So yes, if we believe that this team should be bowl eligible (six wins), then the Temple game is a must win, as the UTSA game is an expected loss. There's no wiggle room left in the season. Gotta win what you're expected to win - MUST WIN.
  5. I would assume someone has run the numbers and the expense outweighs the revenue stream, and there are probably some legal complications vis-a-vis what can and cannot be charged for.
  6. That was the one attended by the guys who sat behind us at RayJ. One of the guys had a food truck outside.
  7. We're complaining that the TBT didn't front-page-above-the-fold tout that this kid is considering (maybe, could happen, might, fiddy-fiddy, not etched in stone, details yet to be worked out) playing at USF, in addition to L'ville or Ole Kentuck, until long after this hypothetical was released in the twittersphere? (Becky did you hear? I heard he's THINKING of asking her out! This is so exciting!) One day we will not be so starved for such positive press - in ink or bytes. I hope.
  8. Hmmm...let's not get ahead of ourselves. Is it possible - possible - that there is a benefit to chilly weather and bikinis? I'm not saying there is, I'm just saying it might warrant a tad more research before committing to such. Sunken cost and all that, just thinking about what's best for the school...
  9. generally, one would tinkle above the ball(s), but if you're prone to stretching, I suppose that could be accomplished. Or were we talking about something else? "tinkle" and "tinkering" are two different things.
  10. So, how much of this is really generational in nature? A long time ago, sports (games making use of human interaction in the physical world) were how we spent our time. Now, there are high school kids who can play the living daylights out of a virtual football game, but simply cannot throw, run or catch. I'm not talking at the level of a high school athlete; I'm talking at the Joe Donut level. A lack of participation early on is not going to suddenly morph into interest later in life. Evolution is our friend, to a degree... I really do believe that the OCS will pay dividends as far as developing a greater interest, by students going forward. The initial generation of USF football fans did what was necessary to embrace the program. All fanbases ebb and flow with the success of the team, and the more successful the team, the less heavy lifting that the marketing department has to do. Since a great number of first-generation fans attended Drive Thru U, we do not have, and never developed during our formative years, the same level of emotional connection that comes from a vibrant in-place rally-round-the-flag environment that the OCS can provide. I started going to the Sun Dome back in '90. And I've said this a million times, if the product isn't entertainin', I ain't payin'. You can't play the ole 'but it's your alma mater! You have to...' song. No, I don't have to do anything once our contract has run its course. What you really want to do is amp up that emotional attachment of your college experience into something that lasts post-graduation. Once the OCS is in place and starts becoming a magnet, then the 'spirit' will evolve. Would it have been nice to undertake the stadium project some time back? Sure. Earlier is always better. Grow with the program. But if Poindexter never embraces football, or any other non-classroom student activities, well, nothing to be done about that. You're not gonna close on every sale. But I do think we will see an uptick in student interest once the OCS has a physical presence. The nut will be ensuring that the product encased therein has entertainment value as well. Don't be Sun Dome 2.0
  11. Vanderbilt 2.0. Ninety years in the conference and a 24% in-conference winning percentage. I firmly believe that if U of SF were to put forth the effort, equaling Vandy's success is an attainable objective.
  12. There's a caveat associated with a five-win team: The NCAA’s Division I Council passed a new rule regarding 6-6 and 5-7 teams with respect to bowl eligibility, according to a release. The rule basically ensures that a 5-7 team won’t be able to get in a better bowl over a 6-6 team. As for the 5-7 teams, here’s how they will become eligible: “It’s impossible to project how many eligible bowl teams we will have,” said Bob Bowlsby, chair of the football oversight committee and commissioner of the Big 12 Conference said in the release. “We think we have a selection process in the postseason that makes sense and is fair to the schools and the bowls.” During the 2015 season, only three 5-7 teams played in bowl games. https://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/sec-football/ncaa-bowl-eligibility-6-6-2016/
  13. I signed up for ESPN+ (September) with the intent of dropping it around the end of November (as bowl season is the domain of ESPN TV). Having never had the service prior, is there any reason to retain it once football season is finito? Thanks in advance.
  14. Yep, c'mon over to da' fa-hm and gather 'round the Philco with me and the missus. I hear President Roosevelt is gonna make a big, important speech afterwards. What's this 'streaming' the kids are talking about? Is that like fly fishin down to the river?
  15. Well, when it comes to high-octane sports stories, few and far between can rival something of the magnitude of U of SF actually beating a 1 and 5 Uconn team by three points. Then again, that win did catapult U of SF's win tally to the equivalent of the combined three previous season's win total for xCJS, putting U of SF at a sold .500 for the season, thus far. For a bunch of people who take considerable pride in having cancelled their subscriptions, how odd that we complain about the lack of coverage. Even though it's covered - we're complaining that it's not in the physical paper. Aren't you people s'posed to be all digital in 2023? Didn't the cool kids decide to forego newspaper (online or other) for other equally cool sources of information? I gotta go back and look at my notes ...
  16. 4th page of Sports Extra, six columns above the fold, no photos. But there's plenty of ink for our future ACC conference mates FSU & The U.
  17. Not necessarily. The preseason O/U was 4.5. I took the under and, assuming USF doesn't win another game this season, I win. And let us remember, it is much more important, in the grand scheme of things, that my ego is sated rather than whether U of SF has a successful season. Raise you little hands if you agree...c'mon, lets see those hands shooting skyward! Surely there would be no rejoicing and lifting of voices if I were to lose this specific wager, correct?
  18. Volunteer coach? Is this like being a prospect in biker gangs: Polish the helmets, go on a Gatorade run, sweep up locker room tape after practice? And if, one random Sunday while sitting in church, you happen to inadvertently overhear a couple of Vagos talking about a dope deal, just casually mention it to the road captain... Or we can go the CIA contractor route...affords a measure of plausible deniability while the 'product collection' work is done at arm's length. And having a porn star name - if, indeed, that is his real name - just adds to the excitement. I think this is a case of getting caught more so than being the rarest of occurrences.
  19. Bearing in mind that - in the long run - we're all dead anyway, so I would argue that we need short term dividends before we realize that kick ass National Championship in the 2098 FBS playoff over New Mexico State University.
  20. Once again, this is why it's ok to let the interns develop material, but I still want a pair of 'grown up' eyes doing the final edit.
  21. 'fraid not. It is only by constant repetition that subjugation can be attained. The truth is not something to be revealed, it is instilled. Therefore, it is only by relentless repetition that the masses will embrace Our Position, cease resistance, and - for lack of a better term - fall in line. As such, we should encourage a multi-thread, almost cut-n-paste style of posting of text that supports the Big Board position, regardless of the level of initial resistance. Or were we talking about the haters? Not sure... Respectfully, D. Samuel Robinson Deputy Assistant Vice Undersecretary Ministry of Marketing & Propaganda
  22. I've given this a lot of thought, and I too, shall not watch this game. 'Cause it's on CBSSN. I will however have it on my TRANS-SISTER (can we say that?) RED-E-OH as background music for whatever other game I'm eyeballin'. Yay, sixties technology!
