  2. From the USF SID OFfice New USF Director of Athletics Named to NCAA Sports Wagering Task Force Doug Woolard, named director of athletics at the University of South Florida May 12, has been named to the National Collegiate Athletic Association Sports Wagering Task Force. The task force has been assembled in response to findings of a national study commissioned by the NCAA that reveals a “disturbing” frequency of sports wagering among student-athletes. The NCAA’s 2003 National Study on Collegiate Sports Wagering and Associated Health Risks is the most comprehensive of its kind to measure the preponderance of wagering among student-athletes. It encompasses responses from approximately 21,000 make and female student-athletes at NCAA member institutions across all three NCAA divisions in most NCAA championship sports. “The scope of sports wagering among intercollegiate student-athletes is startling and disturbing,” says NCAA President Myles Brand. “Sports wagering is a double-threat because it harms the well-being of student athletes and the integrity of college sports.” As a member of the task force, Woolard will be charged with assisting in developing recommendations with a dual focus on ensuring the well being of student-athletes as well as the integrity of intercollegiate athletics. The recommendations could include expanding education efforts, proposed NCAA legislation and suggestions for legislation at the state and federal levels. Woolard is presently in his 10th year as director of athletics at Saint Louis University. He begins his duties at USF June 14.
  3. Bulls fans, I have added an oversized eBay section to the home page on SouthFloridaBulls.com. It features the current Ebay auctions for the search term "South Florida Bulls." It's a handy way to see what Bulls gear is on eBay and still check out the occasionally updated front page at Phoenix, Arizona's favorite Bulls site - SouthFloridaBulls.com. Go to SouthFloridaBulls.com Site and scroll to bottom. Also, the site earns .05 per each bid made from the links there...at that rate, the site be worth $26.35 by 2007...come on join the fun, buy Bulls gear and support your site. Thanks, Bulliever
  4. Good question MikeB. As a matter of fact will be debuting a new board tomorrow to address that very question.
  5. The Cards get a fresh start with a new non-losing conference record vs. the Bulls?
  6. dAfter a couple anti-Bull guest posts we always seem to forget the anonymous guest post that happens every so often on this board that spills of Bulls' inside information. A lot of talk of "Brad's board." This is community property. We do what's best for the community. However, I am of the belief that a-holes will be a-holes, even if they have to register. Then what's next, a 24 hour cooling off period after registration (like the Eagles site had)? I was eager to write something on the Eagles board about JR Reed, yet all new posters have to wait 24 hours to post. By then, I had no access to a computer and have since forgotten that site. I'd like to see us remain open to guest posting. At times we have had to close guest posting and are prepared to do so again - even if only temporary. I like openness and few restrictions, anticipating that most of us are responsible and those that are not will be ignored or have their posts moved. We could moderate a little heavier, but even that becomes uncomfortable and questionable for many. I'm okay with weathering the occassional "guest" cheap shot for the sake of keeping the site accessible to newcomers and thereby further building a strong online Bulls community and presence. I am open to change, even if that means ending guest posting, but I think it is a board-wide decision.
  7. Reed Could Fill Dual Role April 25, 2004 By DAVID MURPHY Throughout last season, the Eagles' top two return men were running back Brian Westbrook and wide receiver James Thrash. But after the Eagles watched Westbrook miss one regular seasob game and parts of three others last season with injuries and traded Thrash to the Redskins in the offseason, it was obvious that they were in the market for a kickoff or punt returner. J.R. Reed could be that player. The Eagles selected the strong, physical safety out of South Florida with their first pick of the fourth round and are well aware of his kick-returning prowess. S J.R. Reed "This guy is one of the toughest guys I've ever seen play college football," said Eagles Vice President of Player Personnel Tom Heckert. "This guy will blow it up in there. He's not a real jitterbug type. He's just a fast, straight, blow it up in there type of guy." Last season, Reed averaged a whopping 31.7 yards per kickoff return for the Bulls. He also returned four punts for 81 yards (20.3 average). He was timed at 4.56 in the 40-yard dash. "I am hoping that [returning kicks] will get me on the field a lot faster," said Reed. "I think I could help the team out a lot returning kicks and I did pretty good this year. I have a lot of confidence at that position." Like many of their selections this weekend, the Reed pick is an interesting one. Though impressed with his ability as a kick returner, the Eagles stressed that they drafted him as a safety. On the surface, the position did not appear to be a dire need, but Heckert and head coach Andy Reid had Reed rated as their top player available and decided to snag him. The Eagles will likely allow him to develop behind free safety Brian Dawkins, whom Reed says is the player after whom he patterns his game. "I am just looking to come in and be part of the system," said Reed. "I am behind Brian Dawkins, Michael Lewis, and Clinton Hart. I'm just trying to come in and fit in. I could probably play nickel at the beginning but work my way up." The Eagles have at times used an extra safety in their dime packages, and Reed has played some snaps at cornerback, so a role for him in passing situations could develop. For now, however, he is just going to concentrate on establishing himself in the NFL. "Thank God I ended up in Philadelphia," said Reed. "I love [secondary/safeties coach] Sean McDermott. I met him when he came down here and I went up there and met him. I think it is a good situation." Story Link Draft Quotes: Tom Heckert Following 4th Rd Picks April 25, 2004 On the 4th round draft selections: "The two guys we picked in the fourth round [OG] Trey Darilek from UTEP, we think is a good, solid player. He played left tackle for them. I think he can play right tackle as well. He'll move inside and play guard. He's a smart, big, tough football player. We've liked him all along. The other kid was J. R. Reed from South Florida. He's from a little smaller school, but he's a super kid. "He's a fast kid. I think he ended up leading the nation in kick returns. He only had 18 of them, but he averaged 31.7 or something. He's had 13 interceptions the last two years. He had seven this year, six last year. He actually played some corner, but he's strictly a safety for us. He's an excellent football player. We're happy to have both of them." On Reed's kick returning ability: "It will definitely help his cause. We like him where we took him as a safety, but you throw in the kick return ability and that's definitely a plus." On whether the 4th round picks were chosen because they were the best available: "Yes. There wasn't just these two. We had a few other guys in the mix. We just thought that these guys were the best players that we could take. So we did it." On drafting linemen that can play several line positions: "Coach Reid will tell you, as an offensive lineman, if you can play two positions, especially on gameday, that's when it really comes into play, where if you can go with eight offensive linemen and a couple of them can play both positions, then you're in great shape. It definitely adds to the value of that player." On whether he considered drafting Shawn Andrews' brother, Mississippi OT Stacy Andrews: "[Offensive line coach] Juan Castillo actually worked him out Friday. He actually went down there and worked him out. It was a consideration. He is obviously a very big athletic project. He played 91 plays in his college career. That was obviously a concern. We were definitely interested in him." On whether there were any quarterbacks worth taking in the fourth round: "There were some guys in there that we had some interest in. We just thought these two players were too good to pass up on. We still have a few guys down in the latter part of this draft we're thinking of, to come in and help us. If not, we think we've got some guys that are free agents that can come in and help us at quarterback." On whether the team is trying to trade into the 5th round: "Yes, we're going to try to do that. We have a couple of six's here and actually only one seven that we could trade. So, we are going to try to do that." On whether there is a need to draft a running back: "I don't think there's any question at all that we're happy with [RBs Brian Westbrook and Correll Buckhalter]. I think the one that we're kind of leaving out is [RB] Reno Mahe. "I don't know how people feel about Reno, but he's a great receiver. The kid caught almost 100 balls his junior year in college, so we know he can be a receiver out of the backfield. We think he shows run skills. Everybody assumes that this guy is small, but when you really think about it, he's about the same size as Brian Westbrook. We have expectations for this guy. He can be a punt returner for us. We're not in a situation where we think we have to have a running back here. I think we're okay." On whether J. R. Reed is a free safety: "Yes, he plays both actually. He has played some corner. I think that's another thing like the offensive line. He can do both. That's just an added bonus." On whether the team needs depth at linebacker: "It's a position we're looking into, but we've got Justin [Ena], Ty[reo Harrison], Keith Adams, and obviously with Ike Reese playing all the positions, we're comfortable there. It's a position where if a guy became available, we'd throw him in the mix and see what happens. It's with all of our positions. If there's a guy there, we'll take him." On whether the best player available approach has been consistent: "Yeah. I think the reaching for the need and all that stuff gets blown out of proportion just a little bit. Most teams aren't going to do something crazy where they've got a guy in the second round and they're in the fifth round and they're going to take the guy in the fifth round because of a need. That stuff usually doesn't happen. "I think most teams do it about the same way. If guys are close, then you can sway your way towards the need. But, if a guy is drastically sitting out above the rest of the players, go ahead and take him. If you have the grade on him that says you like him, just take him and you'll be alright." On whether the two 4th round picks were graded higher than any need position: "Yes, that's it. These two guys were way ahead of the quarterbacks we had right now." On whether drafting offensive linemen is a sign that he doesn't like the young linemen already on the team: "It's really not. To be honest with you, we've spent a lot of time before this. I've gone back and looked at the preseason games where they've played and I've actually went back and watched them in college from last year just to see why we had them rated where we had them rated and if something was different, and they weren't. "I liked them when I went back and watched them on college tapes and I liked them when I looked at them in preseason. We're high on these guys. It's just the more, the merrier. Obviously, it's going to be a battle for some of those spots now. On whether there is less dire need in this year's draft than in other years: "I think to come in and play right away, I think that's true. But, even last year, we weren't drafting guys to come in and have to play right now. If they do, great, but it's obviously a great situation where you don't need a guy to come in here and start right away." On J. R. Reed's ability as a kick returner: "This guy is one of the toughest guys I've ever seen play college football. This guy will blow it up in there. He's not a real jitterbug type. He's just a fast, straight, blow it up in there type of guy. He also does some punts, but we'll see about that." On whether Louisiana Tech QB Luke McCown would have been considered had he fallen to the Eagles pick: "He definitely would have been a consideration. We brought Luke in here. We liked Luke. He was definitely one of the guys we were looking at." On what the team's remaining needs are: "We're just going to go off of the board right now. We're not really targeting any real position. It's going to be a battle with whoever we draft. We still have five picks left. We're going to try to do something. It's really kind of whatever's there. We're not really focusing on one thing." Story Link Draft Quotes: 4th/5th Round Selections April 25, 2004 Selected quotes from the Eagles 4th-round pick (129th overall) Safety J.R. Reed On his kick return ability: "I am hoping that will get me on the field a lot faster. I think I could help the team out a lot returning kicks and I did pretty good this year. I have a lot of confidence at that position." On not being drafted on the first day: "Last night was terrible. I was in bed just watching TV hoping that I would end up in a good place. Thank God I ended up in Philadelphia. I love [secondary coach/ safeties] Coach Sean McDermott. I met him when he came down here and I went up there and met him. I think it is a good situation." On whether he thought he would go earlier in the draft: "I was hoping for the 3rd round, but 4th is just as good." On the contribution he can make as a rookie: "I am just looking to come in and be a part of the system. I am behind [FS] Brian Dawkins, [sS] Michael Lewis, and [FS] Clinton Hart. I'm just trying to come in and fit in. I could probably play nickel at the beginning but work my way up." On whether he played any other special teams at South Florida: "Yes. I played them all. I played kickoff, kick return, punt, and punt return." On whether it worries him that the Eagles are deep at the safety position: "No, it doesn't worry me. There is competition at every level. I am going to have to come in and compete. That is part of life and part of the job." Story Link Not J.R. Reed related, but saw this there too..
  8. J.R. on Eagles' Official Site OVERVIEW One of the nation's top big-play artists, J.R. is the type that plays as if he is on a "search and destroy" mission, whether in games or practices& Three-year starter who has proven head coach Jim Leavitt correct in his assessment of Reed's star potential& His role model has been Denver Broncos safety John Lynch, patterning his hard-hitting style after the former All Pro& Used as a reserve cornerback as a freshman before taking over free safety duties the following year& In 2003, he became the first player in school history to score on a kickoff return and fumble recovery in the same season& Started 33 of 44 games, recording 301 tackles (200 solos) with an 8-yard sack, eight stops for losses of 23 yards, five fumble recoveries for 183 yards in returns, including two touchdowns, three forced fumbles, 18 interceptions for 127 yards in returns (7.1 avg.) and a score, 31 pass break-ups, a blocked kick, 18 kickoff returns for 570 yards (31.7 avg.) and a touchdown and four punt returns for 81 yards (20.3 avg.) in returns& Only Kawika Mitchell (367, 1999-2002) and Roy Manns (317, 1997-2000) had more tackles during a career at South Florida& His 18 pass thefts shattered the old USF career record of 10 by Anthony Henry (1997-2000) and his 127 yards on interception returns are topped only by Bernard Brown (131, 1997-2001) on the school's all-time record chart& His 183 yards on fumble returns also set a school career record. Negatives: Does not have a good feel for pass routes (will turn late)& Has quickness in his backpedal, but can get a little too high in his stance, resulting in him taking false steps and giving separation& Will round his breaks on the ball& Tries to make the tackle too much, getting outside his frame and not bringing his arms to wrap& Hard worker, but needs to be pushed some (will lose focus). 10. Apr 14, 2004 Center Mobley Completes South Florida's Class By BRETT McMURPHY bmcmurphy@tampatrib.com TAMPA - Maurice Mobley, a 6-foot-5, 240-pound center from Parkland (Ill.) Community College, verbally committed to South Florida and will sign today with the Bulls. ``I know it's a tough comparison, but he kind of reminds me of the Mailman [Lakers forward Karl Malone],'' Parkland CC coach Chris Warren told USFBullseye.com. ``When he gets within 10 feet of the rim, somebody better have a body on him or it's going to be trouble. I really thought he'd shatter a backboard this year. He dunks with that kind of force.'' Mobley completes USF's five-man recruiting class. Forward Marius Prekevicius (6-5, 215) of Weatherford (Texas) College and 6-3 guard Montavious Waters of Westover, Ga., earlier committed and are expected to sign today. In November, Solomon Jones, who transferred from Daytona Beach Community College to Cloud County (Kan.) Community College in January to improve his academics, and Richland (Texas) High's Collin Dennis signed with USF. The USF women's team is not expected to sign any recruits today, the first day of the late signing period. The USF women have three scholarships available. This weekend three of the nation's top junior college players - Seward (Kan.) Community College guard Stephanie Thiel and Trinity Valley (Texas) Community College teammates Vanessa Clementino, a 6-2 center, and Chanae Early, a 5-5 guard - will visit USF. 11. Thanks SC for the links and thanks to everyone who has found and contributed links for the 2004 football title bar above. -Bulliever
  12. Good idea E.T. I hope we get good participation.
  13. From the USF SID Office Subject: USF FOOTBALL SCRIMMAGE Date: Sat 03/27/04 06:27 PM MARCH 27, 2004 Number Ones are the Bright Spot in USF's Scrimmage; Leavitt Holds Brian Fisher From Practice The number one defense didn't allow a score all afternoon including a red zone series and goal line stance against the number one offense in USF's 117-snap scrimmage. The number one offense, led by quarterback Pat Julmiste, did manage three touchdowns and two field goals, all against the number two defense. Julmiste completed 17 of 32 passes for 164 yards, including a 30-yard touchdown pass to Joe Bain, and he also ran for touchdowns of two and six yards. Santiago Gramatica capitalized on Julmiste's play as well, hitting field goals of 20, 31 and 40 yards, before missing from 50 and 37. "My biggest concern is just trying to get the guys playing with effort," said head coach Jim Leavitt. "We had some good moments. The number one defense on the goal line did an outstanding job. Our quarterbacks are inconsistent and our offensive line was just okay. We're young at running back and the guys coming in this fall are really going to get an opportunity to play." Walk-on Anthony Gaines was the leading ground-gainer with 14 rushes for 29 yards, including a 20-yard touchdown run on a fake reverse. Trae Williams, who played as the number one tailback, finished with eight carries for 29 yards, and returning senior Clenton Crossley carried nine times for 19 yards. Meanwhile, Leavitt said he chose to keep versatile offensive player Brian Fisher out of practice today. "I just felt there were some other things he needed to take care of, so I held him out," said Leavitt. Asked if it is a suspension, Leavit said, "No, not at this time. It's just day-to-day. Today he's not practicing, tommorow is a new day and we'll take it from day to day." The Bulls are off until Tuesday.
  14. New policy....SG posts can start here and be available to the general Bulls population, but will be moved to the Big East Board until further notice.
  15. The game I am referring to was Houston. Other than that game, when we have held a late lead (however rare) we held it down the stretch. You memory is weak if you do not recall the number of games under our previous coach that we would go into a 7 minute funk and watch a lead evaporate - almost routinely. SGs first year at the Bulls' helm ended with an 8-19 (2-12 C-USA). His overall record you celebrate was 108-100. Very unremarkable. You'll need to retain some objectivity or no one will take your SG posts seriously ::Love Fest::. SG did some good things here - and he failed to do other things. To try to hold CoachMcC in comparison to SG after 7 years is a laugh. Or to compare the two in their current situations, just doesn't make sense. Don't forget, your alma mater did not rid itself of SG, they gave SG a contract extension. SG left on his own with time remaining on his contract. He subsequently bad-mouthed USF. Therefore, no number of pro-SG posts is going to cause even the slightest bit of remorse by USF fans. Most are willing to see what McC can do over the next few years as USF will meet its biggest basketball challenge ever - the Big East. You never liked it when SG was compared to his predecesor - Bobby Paschal. BP not only won a conference championship, appeared in two NCAA Tournaments, but he almost kicked your ass in a brawl ::knighted:. Close the chapter on SG...
  16. Don't forget, that with the exception of one game this year, we have shown the ability to protect a late lead. Granted, we haven't had many, but we also haven't had collapses of monumental proportion as we did in the years leading up to Mac's arrival.
  17. Assuming dabull80 and smazza are each in for $100, we are at: Bulliever $ 100 E.T. $ 100 bullwark $ 50 dabull80 $100 smazza $100 Total $ 450 We need $550 more to support a player's locker...right now, at $450, we can support a scale. A locker sounds so much more prestigious. Will a few more Bulls step up?
  18. Sorry ...forgot about the Storm...I have been out of Tampa too long I guess. Any other legit team? The Rowdies? ;D I'll get the Storm on there today. Bulliever
  19. We started this board in hopes we could grow an interest and following prior to the Bulls' entrance into the Big East. This "following" would attract other Bulls to focus in on the BE and get ready for 2005. The board will wilt and die unless someone, a Bulls fan or otherwise, decides to step up and get this board going. We need someone that will: 1) Post stories, stats, facts, opinions, etc. to foster discussion regarding our new conference home, among Bulls and other BE fans. 2) Help get the word out to other Bulls and BE members and their sites. We need to get the conversation primed and ready for 2005... Please let me know if you are someone that can help drive this board. Thanks, Bulliever
  20. I thought about that Minotaur deal too.  Fortunately, I was not involved in that... I have done some minimal fundraising via the board in the past and have been trustworthy...we used the board to fund the Sheriff's and others' activities (road trips to games, as I recall).  If anyone wants to join me, you can be sure the money noted on this post will go straight to USF.  If we don't get a grand, my $100 will still go to the drive in the name of "TheBullsPen.com" or "Friends of TheBullsPen.com", something that we can decide by a poll.  We should harness the strength of this board to benefit USF Athletics when presented with opportunities like this. Donations less than $100 are welcome too, I am going to start the giving at that sum, but any contribution to the Bulls will be outstanding. Modified by Bulliever to correct punctuation
  21. If 9 people meet my $100 pledge, we can sponsor a "TheBullsPen.com" player's locker. If we can get more than 9, we might be able to do a coach's locker or some other items. Just post it here...and help build the new facility. Thanks, Brad
  22. That NIT win over St. Johns was HUGE...it came after a win over Coppin State. I believe Felipe Lopez was on the SJ squad at the time. After that win, we had the upsettting game against NBE and current C-USA pal Marquette...I know most remember that game and Chucky at the line. An FT away from MSG.
