Just one example of an AD NOT being a graduate of the college they are leading.  Foley, UF, http://www.gatorzone.com/foley/

 

These guys get hired, not to be fans, but to build a program.  They have a vested interest in their schools doing well.  Win and you continue to get paid.  I have no problem with Harlan not being a grad.  And, to the point of being highly paid athletic leaders - the AD is the only one who I would consider being highly paid - unless you are including coaches.  You want the most qualified candidate no matter the school they attended.
