according to the trainer, golden retriever / chow mix

Thank you! interesting mix.

I'm thinking about dogs these days, thinking of getting one.

Anybody here ever had a spaniel?

I haven't, but I've been researching these:

If you're looking for a pure bred, search rescues in your area.  There should be one for just about every breed out there.

I was going to ask you surrender your man card until I read this

...used successfully for shooting small game...

You could have some fun with that dog sittin' on the back porch with a .22 sippin' a beer.

Both the Shirlington and Gelncarlyn dog parks are walking distance for me - I go for therapy, LOL. Not many spaniels around here though.

Spaniels make great small hunting dogs, they can flush, point and retrieve. They make terrible watchdogs, though, as they apparently love all humans unconditionally.

I think the cavalier is a little too small for me. I'm thinking springer or cocker maybe.

Regardless, they have a bunch of medical issues, make sure and get it tested

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are cute and small.  Sometimes small dogs make better pets, and they live a lot longer than those big 100+ lb dogs.

Cockers are a little bigger than King Charles, so that would improve your "man cred" of not owning a toy (as in size) dog.

English Springers are very athletic dogs, and they come in two sizes.  Bench bred, which are the ones with uniform coats and are the ones you see in dog conformation shows.  Field bred have uneven coloring and are a little smaller, but they are more athletic.  They often complete in field trial competitions.  If you are interested in a rescue dog, check out ESRA - www.springerrescue.org.

There are also Brittany Spaniels.  They have shorter ears and slightly shorter hair than the English Springers.  I do not know as much about them, but I believe they are similar in temperament to the English Springers.

There are also other variations of spaniels, but I have only seen them in AKC dog shows.  Do your research, and you will find a good friend.

never owned one, but my understanding is they have a pretty good temperment, but need a good amount of exercise

Thanks for the rescue link!

Also want one with the shortest hair possible, since maintaining their coats can be a real hassle...

Couple of interesting ones right down the street. the pup looks like a mix, could be a good pickup. Mom is brown, pup is black

Every man should have a dog. Good luck in finding her/him, char!
