$100 Million Gender Discrimination Suit Filed

A former public relations employee at Publicis Groupe SA has filed a $100 lawsuit against the company, claiming sexual discrimination. The plaintiff claims in the suit that she and other women have been unfairly fired after returning from maternity leave and that the company hires men and a disproportionately high rate. Also, the suit notes that while women make up "70 percent of the public relations staff," they only hold about 15 percent of the leadership positions. School Bus Crash Suit Settled in Virginia 

The Suffolk Country School Board has agreed to an undisclosed settlement in a lawsuit stemming from a school bus crash in January 2009. The suit was filed by the mother of one of the students on the bus who suffered neck and back injuries in the crash. City Settles $47,000 Suit with Police Lieutenant

The city of Concord, Calif., has agreed to a $47,512 settlement with a city police lieutenant. The lawsuit claimed the lieutenant was transferred and demoted due to speaking out about a sexual harassment lawsuit. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced a recall of 1,800 mini-candle travel sets sold by Tommy Bahama. The agency reported that the flame can spread beyond the wick, making a larger flame than expected. Pork, Chicken Products Recalled Due to Listeria

A Northern California food supplier has issued a recall of 64,000 pounds of chicken and pork products due to bits of broccoli in the products that could be contaminated with Listeria. Johnson & Johnson Recalls Sutures

It has been reported that in late December, Johnson & Johnson recalled four types of sutures due to potential contamination from unsealed packages. The recall affects the Ethilon, Ethibond, Mersilene and Mersilk sutures. Couple Awarded $5.7 Million in Van Wreck

A California couple has been awarded $5.7 million after they were rear-ended by a Southern California Edison truck in a snow storm two years ago. The accident occurred while the plaintiffs were installing snow chains on their tires safely on the side of the road. The suit claimed the driver of the truck was not properly trained to drive in snow, lost control and rear-ended the couple. Suit Filed Against Movie Producer Brothers

A lawsuit has been filed against major movie producers Harvey and Bob Weinstein by two animators over profits from the animated movie "Escape from Planet Earth." The lawsuit claims the Weinsteins shorted the plaintiffs on potential profits from the movie, and then paid them $500,000 in an attempt to avoid a lawsuit during the Academy Awards. Civil Rights Lawsuit Filed Against Ohio City

A lawsuit has been filed against Waynesville, Ohio and the local police department over various civil rights violations. In their lawsuit, a local couple claims police entered their apartment without a warrant or permission and forced the two out of the shower, making them stand naked in front of the officers while being questioned. The suit also claims officers allowed the couple's nanny to enter their house and remove some of their belongings without permission. Website Files Public Records Suit Against Austin

An investigative website in Austin, Texas, has filed a lawsuit against the Austin City Council over alleged failure to disclose public information. Ferrari Settles Trademark Suit with Ford

Ford Motors has settled a lawsuit it filed against Ferrari over the use of name "F-150." Ford claimed in its trademark infringement lawsuit that Ferrari was improperly using the name on its Formula 1 race car. New Suit Filed Over Faulty Hip Implants

A group of Rochester, New York, residents have filed a lawsuit against DePuy Orthopaedics over faulty hip implants. The plaintiffs claimed they suffered injuries after having the implants put in and have to have additional surgeries. The company failed to adequately test the product before putting it out on the market, the suit alleges. A Florida lawmaker has been accused of sexual harassment and retaliation in a lawsuit filed in federal court. The plaintiff, who is a U.S. representative on a commission in Europe, claims Rep. Alcee Hastings made repeated sexual advances toward her and unwanted touching from January 2008 until February 2010. A lawsuit has been filed against the Fayette Power Project between Houston and Austin for "nearly a decade" of Clean Air Act violations. A whistleblower lawsuit filed against the state of Iowa may proceed, a state court of appeals ruled this week. Mazda Recalled Vehicles over Spider Web Issues

Mazda has issued a recall of 52,000 cars after it was discovered a small spider that is attracted to the smell of gasoline may build its webs in the vehicle's emissions system. The recall affects the company's Mazda6 line, which has two pipes coming out of its gas line, producing a smell strong enough to attract the spider but not kill it. Plagiarism Suit in Ohio Settled with Professor

An Ohio University professor has received a settlement totaling over $150,000 in a plagiarism lawsuit in which the professor claimed his civil rights were violated. In 2004, the professor was held responsible for allegations of allowing plagiarism by graduate students in the mechanical engineering department, and his graduate faculty status was revoked. Johnson & Johnson has issued a recall of 384,180 insulin pumps that could leak during use, posing a serious risk of health issues to the user. Jury Awards Former Foster Child $600,000

A Washington jury has awarded $600,000 to a former foster child in a lawsuit that alleged negligence by social workers during a "ritual sex abuse" investigation in the mid-1990s. According to the lawsuit, the state Department of Social and Health Services and a former employee failed to quickly remove the then 11-year-old child from the home of a local police detective after reports of neglect were filed. Kansas City Priests Accused of Molestation

A Missouri man has filed a lawsuit against two former Kansas City priests, claiming they both sexually abused him when he was a boy. The suit alleges the molestation happened when the boy was eight-years-old by one defendant and then again when he was 13 by the other. The Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph is also named in the lawsuit, which claims the church should have been aware of the priests' behaviors and done more to stop them. Student Denied Athletic Opportunities Files Suit

A student in the Jefferson County, Ky., school system will file a lawsuit against the district over being denied the opportunity to play sports at Ballard High School. The student transferred to Ballard from another high school after she was bullied and was given approval to compete in athletics by the Kentucky High School Athletic Association. Suit Filed Against Washington, Refinery Emissions

Several Seattle environmental groups have filed a lawsuit against the state of Washington in order to force them to reduce emissions from local oil refineries. The lawsuit claims state agencies "failed to require reasonably available control technology for greenhouse gas emissions." Suit Settled over Fatal Boating Accident

A settlement has been reached in a lawsuit filed against a Connecticut lakeside bar stemming from a fatal 2008 drunken boating accident. The lawsuit claimed bartenders at Down the Hatch continued to serve a man who was well beyond the legal blood alcohol limit. Wrongful Death Suit Filed Against Hospital

A lawsuit is set to be filed against Massachusetts General Hospital and five doctors over the death of a 76-year-old woman last year due to a drug administration error. The woman was admitted to the hospital with an infection in her shoulder but was given far too much blood thinners, the suit said.
