Yikes!

Bobby Bowden vs. first-time opponents

posted by Andrew Carter on Sep 24, 2009 10:00:00 AM

Florida State on Saturday will play USF. This is the first time in history the two schools will play one another. If you’re a stat man, that’s not good for the Bulls. Why? Here’s why: Bobby Bowden is 30-1 against first-time opponents during his time at FSU.

Here’s the full note, courtesy FSU sports information man extraordinaire Bob Thomas:

Florida State coach Bobby Bowden’s teams have been especially tough against first-time opponents in his 34 seasons as the Seminoles’ front-man. As Florida State prepares to meet budding in-state power USF on Saturday – the first meeting between the two schools - it should be noted that Bowden is 30-1 in such scenarios at FSU. That .968 winning percentage in first-time encounters includes a 6-1 record against ranked opponents (3-1 vs. Top 10). Bowden’s most recent victory over a first-time foe came in the Dec. 27, 2008 Champs Sports Bowl rout of Wisconsin, 42-13. Florida State’s lone loss came at No. 5 Michigan in 1986, 20-18. The Seminoles were awarded a 1983 forfeit victory over Tulane, despite a 34-28 loss on the field in New Orleans.

That gives us a 3.2% chance right now. Not as high as I would go (20%), but it is a chance non the less. Let's go! Less than 2 days left.

You have to figure the competition in the 80s before entering the ACC was pretty good since they were an independent.
