Today marks the beginning of the 2006 tour de france. This will be one of the most interesting tours in recent years. With the retirement of 7 time winner Lance Armstrong, that left the door open to many riders that were always in his shadow. But, a recent development involving a doping scandal has eliminated many favorite riders such as Jan Ullrich and Ivan Basso. With this shake up, some of the not as familiar names are now possible contenders, such as Levi Leipheimer and Floyd Landis. It should be interesting to watch

STAGE 1

187 km loop starting and finishing in Strasbourg. There are 3 sprints in this stage and one mountian point. Some hills in the region, but nothing too serious.

comments:

A pack of 7 riders pulled away early and held the lead for much of the rac until the final 20km. Amazing sprint to the finish by the pelaton(main field). Prologue stage winner Thor Husovd seriously injured in sprint by a spectator. Status is unknown. American George Hincapie becomes the overall leader to take the yellow jersey.

This is the worst thing to happen to the Tour de France, let alone the whole sport. 40 guys banned, and then the winner pops positive on a drug test? Terrible...And even the French liked Landis.

They all cheat. The doping technology is way ahead of the testing technology. To win, these guys have to do it.

Landis turned his Disney movie story into pure embarrassment.

I hope he's cleared.

The entire Landis issue is the ratio of testosterone/epitestosterone in his system. If he had doped, then the levels would have stayed high for more than one day. I'm not sure if his cortisone shot for his hip would affect his levels, but he was drinking the night before he was tested.

It's highly likely he will pass the series B test and keep his title.
