Bulls Return to Tallahassee for NCAA First Round

USF was given a six-seed in the Albany Region and will face 11-seed Buffalo Saturday.

TAMPA, MARCH 12, 2018 – The USF women’s basketball team is no stranger to the six-11 match-up in the NCAA Tournament. For the fourth consecutive season, the Bulls will play in the six-11 pairing in the NCAA First Round. The Bulls return to Tallahassee, Fla. this weekend. The sixth-seeded Bulls will face Buffalo Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

Seniors Maria Jespersen and Laia Flores became the program’s first graduating senior class to make four trips to the NCAA Tournament Monday night. The Bulls will face Buffalo in the second game of the Tallahassee pod. The game will tip at 1:30 p.m. and will be televised regionally on ESPN2. Third-seeded Florida State will play host to the first and second rounds and the Seminoles will face 14-seed Little Rock at 11 a.m. at the Tucker Center.

Ticket Info

Tickets for Saturday's game will be available when the NCAA and host institution Florida State release ticket details, including price, purchasing locations and procedures. On Tuesday, March 14, USF season ticket members and Bulls Club donors will receive an email with detailed information about how to request tickets.

The Tournament

·      Florida State will host the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament at Donald L. Tucker Center (Capacity: 12,100).

·      Host and three-seed Florida State (25-6) will face Little Rock (23-9). Florida State lost in the semifinals of the ACC Tournament, 90-80, to Notre Dame. Little Rock earned one of 32 automatic bids as the Sun Belt Champions. Buffalo lost in the MAC Tournament Championship to Central Michigan.

·      American Athletic Conference foe, UConn, is again the overall No. 1 seed of the tournament and the Albany Region. Mississippi State is the No. 1 seed of the Kansas City Region and Notre Dame is the No. 1 seed in the Spokane Region. Louisville is the No. 1 seed in Lexington Region.

·      The first round of the NCAA Tournament will be played on March 16 & 18. The second round will be played March 17 & 19. The Regionals will be played March 23-26. The Final Four will take place March 30-April 1 in Columbus, Ohio.

Notables

  • The Bulls are making their fifth tournament appearance in the last six seasons and the program's sixth overall trip. This is the fourth consecutive year USF will make an NCAA appearance.

  • USF will play in the 6/11 match-up for the fourth consecutive year and are 2-1 in its previous first round appearances of the match-up. The Bulls were seeded sixth in 2014-15 and 2015-16 and seeded 11th in 2016-17. USF defeated 11-seed Colorado State 48-45 in 2016 and LSU 73-64 in 2015.

  • The Bulls finished the regular season with 24 wins, the most in program history. USF tacked on two more wins in the American Athletic Conference Tournament and is one win away from tying the program’s highest win total in history (27).

  • Previously, USF has been seeded as highly as a six-seed and as low as an 11-seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Bulls were a nine-seed in their first ever NCAA appearance in 2006 and a 10-seed in 2013.

I'm not bracketology or basketball guru, but dont they usually try to split conference-mates up into different brackets? In this case only two AAC teams how hard would that have been?

I believe the rules state teams from the same conference can’t meet until the elite 8. Now this should be changed to the final 4 when there are less than 3 teams from the same conference in the tourney but the selection committee does whatever they want. According to Jose he was told this had to do with geography which if true it still wouldn’t make sense as we are much closer to Lexington than we are to Albany and they very easily could have moved us and FSU to Louisville bracket with the same seeding and moved Stanford out west for Spokane with Notre Dame and Georgia to Albany.

Glad we are in. 6th seed is where I thought we would end up. My "whine" about the NCAA tournament is that if a conference only gets 2 teams in they should not meet (assuming winning all their games) until the Championship game.  3 or 4 in the final 4. 5, 6, 7, or 8 until the Elite 8. 9 to 16 until the Sweet 16. This is not too hard to implement.

I'm a little confused. If USF was going to host they told us that you might not get your season tickets as it is an NCAA event and they are in charge of seating.

Get an email today that says in part "FSU will assign USF an area for our fans and seats within that area will be assigned based on 2017-18 donor level and priority points. "  So if we host the NCAA chooses but if FSU hosts they get to choose?  I'm probably reading more into it than there is but it just sounded wrong.

The last time we hosted they originally gave out seating other than season assignments , but then switched them to season ticket position, except for a few accounts.
