And hell, Northwestern and South Carolina are directional as well. Do they get less respect because they use a compass direction in their brand naming?

Technically, South Carolina is not directional, they're named after the state.  Southern Cal, however, is.

Another example or two.... People in North Carolina refer to NC State (which is actually North Carolina State University) as simply "State." Everyone knows which school you mean. Also, people in NC use both "Carolina" and "UNC" interchangeably to refer to the University of North Carolina.

But we aren't marketing to "locals." If you told me you sent to "State" I would be like... uh... do you mean Florida state? Or Ohio State? Michigan state?

and if you said "Carolina" I would be like uh..... which one? North Carolina? South Carolina? East Carolina?...

We are attempting to build a brand nation wide for this university and its academics and prestige. South Florida is the best name on which to build a nationwide brand name. Not a random acronym that people will have a hard time remembering.

I agree. Plus it has the added benefit that people nationwide will not think USF stands for University of Southern Florida. 🤘

When people tell me they went to Connecticut, I ask where in Connecticut?

Nobody says Connecticut, they say UCONN. Bad example.

When people tell me they went to Florida, I ask where in Florida?

And both are USC.

I would immediately think UNC.

I wasn’t trying to be.  It’s just that in that last couple decades we’ve grown overly concerned with the fact we’re no longer the University closest in proximity to students in the southern half of Florida.  Maybe it’s the tinmen blather, maybe it’s an inferiority complex.  Be proud South Florida.

How many of you are glad this rivalry exists?

It's the only game on our schedule that has any emotion behind it. I love it.

It is definitely not just UCF fans that bring up your name not being accurate.

When you say 'South Florida' just about everyone thinks Palm, Broward, and Dade Counties. People and culture are so different from Tampa Bay.
