Bulls get another defensive athlete for the 2018 class

"...Collins projects as both a defensive back or even possibly linebacker with his ability to tackle.."

2018 Defensive Tackle Tyrone Barber and Safety Jake Collins Verbally Commit to USF Football

The Bulls picked up their fourth and fifth verbal commitments of the week — a big defensive tackle out of Venice and a speedy free safety from Lake Worth.

...ATH Jake Collins

6'2", 200 pounds

Playing mostly free safety and some corner for Park Vista last year, Collins totaled 71 tackles (4TFLs), 4 INTs, and 2 forced fumbles.

The Lake Worth product has flown under the radar for the most part throughout his recruitment, only drawing interest from a handful of FBS schools. He got a chance to put himself out there this past February when he participated in two of Nike’s “The Opening” camps in Orlando and Miami.

He's listed as an athlete, so the USF staff probably thinks that his speed and size can be used in multiple roles in the secondary.

I really like this pick up. I could be wrong, but the video reminded me a bit of Nate Allen. He has great size and I was really impressed with his speed and physicality. He demonstrates the agility to run full speed while still making the tackle one on one.  I have to imagine that the staff enjoyed watching these clips in the film room.

Sounds like he got an offer from a bigger fish.

My best guess is that he never received an official committable offer and reopened his recruitment after finding out.

Maybe, at with now 25 commits, some may bolt if something they prefer comes available...but he did say we're still on his list.

It's hard to get too excited about kids committing in the summer, with so much time left to NSD as well as opportunity to blow out seasons or injuries.

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."
