I was at that game.  I remember in the first quarter thinking 'What kinda crap show is this?'  Did not use the word crap though.  We scored first and they ran off back to back TD drives.  I remember looking at my boy Sig and saying "I don't think Holtz is the answer." We did run off a bunch of points and I was happy we won but I was like...   Then drove up to Gainesville the next week and watch us bumble and stumble through a game we should have won.  Then went to the next game at RayJay where we barely... yes barely... because they held us to 1 score in the first half... good think it was Taggart's ****** west coast offense and the defense didn't give up a score.  We did win that game 24-12... but I knew Holtz was not the answer.  I knew we'd be like :icon_drink: for the next few years.  It was around that time I joined the "Fire Skip Holtz" crowed.  Yes... in his first season.

Aside from three straight losing seasons, his refusal to take chances at times is what did it for me. I remember a scenario against Cincinnati where I believe it was Second & Goal inside the 5, just before halftime....we still had a timeout or two, and around 30 seconds left. Skip let the time run down to one or two seconds left, called a timeout, then kicked a field goal. I think everyone in the stadium booed, and we wound up losing by 3 (30-27 I think). Just too conservative IMO.

Unless you're a LaTech fan also, he only had 2 straight losing seasons ... and didn't he do something similar at Miami? Although I don't remember if it was in the game we won or the one we lost down there.

 You are correct. 8-5, 5-7, 3-9

We got blown out by Miami in that game but at the time we had all 3 timeouts with around a minute to go and were only down by 16 and had the ball in the red zone but skip refused to use the timeouts and we ended up settling for 3. A td might have turned that game around but skip sat on the 3 timeouts and only used 1

I remember that.

I think it was at that time I abandoned any remaining hope he'd turn it around.

Completely forgot about that Miami game. Same exact scenario there. I found an article on the game vs. Cincy that I described. Probably one of the best performances of Daniel's career that day. There is mention of the Holtz gaffe before halftime in this article. ...

A recap of that Miami game you mentioned. It was the 40-9 loss recap. There is a pretty hilarious mention of Holtz refusing to use a timeout before halftime, which summed up what most of us probably felt at the time....

I think this was the game where he was also on camera laughing while executing the TO debacle.....
