Villar and McClanahan Earn AAC Weekly Honor Roll

PROVIDENCE, R.I., MARCH 20, 2017 – University of South Florida baseball sophomore third baseman David Villar (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) and redshirt-freshman pitcher Shane McClanahan (Cape Coral, Fla.) have been named to the American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll, the league announced Monday afternoon.

Villar had by far his best weekend of the season and perhaps the best weekend for any Bull this year. He hit .636 (7-for-11) with a double, three homeruns and 12 RBI during a four-game sweep of Harvard. Villar also scored seven runs and slugged 1.545. He had a hit in every game of the series with multiple RBI in all four games. Villar capped the weekend with a 2-for-3, three run and five RBI outburst in a 14-2 win Sunday. The sophomore crushed a grand slam to right field in the third inning to make it a 7-0 game, as it was the first USF grand slam in nearly two years.

McClanahan pitched a gem in game one of Saturday’s double-header against Harvard. Though it was only a seven inning game, McClanahan went the distance, struck out a career-high 11 men and did not walk anyone. He gave up just one run on six hits, improving his record to 4-0.

The 19-1 Bulls received a No. 21 ranking according to Perfect Game on Monday and play the first of five games this week when they host North Florida Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

Surprised Villar wasn't Player of the Week.  Not only did he have a monster week, but he drove in some key runs in close ball games in 3 of the 4 games.

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."
