Bulls and Crimson Open Four Game Series Friday

TAMPA, MARCH. 16, 2017 – Riding 14-straight victories, the University of South Florida baseball team welcomes Harvard into town for a four-game series set to begin Friday at 6:30 p.m.

Sunday’s game, slated for 1:00 p.m., can be streamed live on USF Baseball’s Facebook page.

The Bulls (15-1) extended the win streak to 14 games, tying the third-longest in program history. They did so behind a walk off homerun to complete a three-game sweep of Valparaiso over the weekend.

Junior Kevin Merrell (Odessa, Fla.) leads the Bulls with a .433 average, 24 runs scored and three triples. Sophomore Coco Montes (Miami) sits second with a .387 average and a team-high three homers.

Senior Phoenix Sanders (Gainesville, Fla.) will get the ball Friday night with his 1.78 ERA and team-leading 37 strikeouts.

Redshirt-freshman Shane McClanahan (Cape Coral, Fla.) will start in game 1 of Saturday’s double-headers, as he leads USF with a 1.33 ERA. Redshirt-senior Ryan Valdes (Tampa) will start game 2 coming off his second start of the season in which he struck out seven against Jacksonville on March 7.

Freshman Collin Sullivan (Randolph, Mass.) will make his first collegiate start on Sunday

Scouting Report – Harvard

The Crimson (7-3) have been traveling through Florida since March 10 and are currently 3-3 on their spring break trip, winning their last two contests. 

Harvard is led offensively by a trio of Floridians. Junior infielder Matt Rothenberg leads the team with a .500 average in seven games played. Sophomore outfielder Trent Bryan is batting .440 with eight games under his belt and classmate Patrick Robinson is hitting .367. Freshman infielder Chad Minato bats. .350.

The Crimson will throw sophomore righty Simon Rosenblum-Larson on Friday night, as he sports a 6.10 ERA in two starts. Junior righty Ian Miller will go in game 1 Saturday with his team-best 1.00 ERA in two starts with 18.0 innings pitched. He also leads the Crimson with 13 strikeouts. Kevin Stone will go in game 2 with his 1.42 ERA in a pair of starts and three appearances.

Pitching Sunday will be junior righty Noah Zavolas, who holds a 2.77 ERA in two starts. He has logged 13.0 innings of work and has struck out eight.

Notables

  • Merrell was named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week on Monday for his efforts during a perfect 5-0 week for the Bulls. The junior hit .526 with a pair of homeruns in an 8-1 win over Villanova on March 8. 
  • Sanders was named to the AAC Weekly Honor Roll for his line in Friday night’s 11-2 win over Valpo. Sanders tossed 7.0 innings, allowed five hits and no runs while striking out 10.
  • The Bulls’ 14-game winning streak is tied for the third-longest in program history and the second-longest active streak in the country.
  • Montes has now hit in 14-straight games and senior Luke Borders (Winter Haven, Fla.) has reached base safely in every game this season.
  • The USF arms lead the nation with 11.5 strikeouts per nine innings and sit second with just 5.53 hits allowed per nine innings. The team ranks fourth in the country with a 2.01 ERA.

Game 2 start time at 4:30. Bulls shaking hands and talking to fans along the right field line. This is a gorgeous facility. 

@Brad I keep having issues loading photos on mobile. I click on "Click to choose files," choose a file I want and there's always an error. I deleted all of my attachments so I don't think I'm over the quota.
