Merrell and Sanders Recognized By the AAC

 

PROVIDENCE, R.I., MARCH 13, 2017 – University of South Florida baseball junior shortstop Kevin Merrell (Odessa, Fla.) and senior pitcher Phoenix Sanders (Gainesville, Fla.) have been named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week and to the Weekly Honor Roll, respectively, the league announced Monday.  

Merrell led the Bulls in hitting over a 5-0 week, batting .526 (10-for-19) collecting a hit in all five games, including multi-hit games three times. He led the Bulls with seven RBI and 10 runs scored. Against Villanova in an 8-1 win on March 8, Merrell finished 4-for-5 with a career-high five RBI and two home runs. Merrell also tallied three stolen bases and only struck out once during the week. Merrell leads the Bulls with a .433 average and 24 runs scored.

Sanders earns his first weekly honor of the season on the heels of a seven inning outing against Valparaiso on Friday. The senior allowed five hits and struck out 10 batters in an 11-2 win. Sanders did not allow a run, lowering his ERA to 1.78 on the season. 

The 15-1 Bulls are back in action this Friday for the start of a four-game series against Harvard.
