Coco Montes Named American Player of the Week

Montes hit a team-high .421 and drove in a team-best five RBI

TAMPA, FEB. 27, 2017 – University of South Florida baseball player Coco Montes has been named The American Athletic Conference Player of the Week, the league announced Monday afternoon.

The sophomore second baseman led the Bulls’ offense and was a key factor in a 5-0 week. Montes hit a team-best .421 (8-for-19) during a week for that began with a win at No. 3 Florida State on Tuesday night. Montes totaled three runs, his second homerun of the season and a team-high five RBI.

In the ninth-inning comeback win at FSU Tuesday, Montes went 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored that was the tying tally. Over the weekend in a four-game sweep of Miami (Ohio), Montes went 7-for-16 (.437) and had a pair of multi-hit games. He had a 2-for-4 effort in game 1 of Saturday’s double-header with two RBI and a run scored, helping his team to a 7-2 win. In the series finale Sunday afternoon, Montes clubbed a season-best three hits, added another run and a two more RBI, including his second homer of the year. Montes is riding a six-game hit streak and has three multi-hit games this season.

The Bulls remain at home when they welcome Toledo into Tampa for a three-game series that begins at 6:30 p.m. this Friday. Fans can purchase season tickets, flex plans and single-game tickets at USFBullsTix.com or by calling 1-800-Go-Bulls.

Congrats Coco!  Well deserved.  He's also been great defensively.  Yesterday he made a play a couple steps on the SS side of 2nd base to throw a guy out at first.  Not an easy play for a second baseman.

I'm loving this team this year. I still think we're a year away, but if we keep up the pitching, we could sneak our way into the field.

I was talking with a guy on staff yesterday and that seems to be the consensus.  He told me we have a 3 game home and home setup with UNC for the next two years.  He also mentioned Ohio State too.  Those would be great home games if true.

Felt the same way coming in but the pitching top to bottom has been lights out. With good pitching and defense you're in every game. And even though it sounds ridiculous, the fact that these kids can rally from behind in the ninth to win will really give them confidence. Just need to bet up on the teams that we should and stock like a lot of Ws before conference play

Nothing to make you look forward to baseball more than a winning team...that, and the basketball season we just had.

Season's over, all the hard work has paid off and we made it to the post-season tourney, yeah! Do we get a first round bye if some of our players get "delayed" at the airport?

It was over for me SO many games ago.

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.
