TAMPA, FEB. 23, 2017 – Fresh off its win over No. 3 Florida State, the University of South Florida baseball team returns home for 17 straight games, starting with a four-game series against Miami (Ohio) beginning Friday night.

The Bulls (3-1) earned their first victory over the Seminoles since 1989 on Tuesday in Tallahassee and did so in dramatic fashion. Down, 2-0, in the ninth inning, the patient Bulls worked three walks, were the beneficiaries of a passed ball, a sac fly and a timely hit with two outs to strike four times in the frame. USF used six different arms that combined to throw a one-hitter against an FSU squad that had plated 23 runs in the previous two games.

Scouting Report – Miami (Ohio)

The Redhawks (0-3) began their season on the road at Arkansas and dropped all three weekend contests while being outscored, 23-2. Though the pitching struggled as a whole, senior Brad Schwartz tossed 5.0 scoreless innings of one-hit ball in relief and recorded five strikeouts.

The bats struggled against the Razorbacks as well, but freshman catcher Cal Elvers impressed with a 4-for-8 opening series that included a double and one of the team’s two RBI. Freshman infielder Landon Stephens was strong in his debut weekend with a 3-for-9 (.333) series and a run scored. Redshirt junior first baseman Ross Haffey was the only other Redhawk to hit better than .200, as he went 3-for-12 with a home run. Haffey led his team last season with a .355 average, 39 runs scored, 20 doubles and 48 RBI.

Notables

·   USF was recognized as the D1Baseball Team of the Day following Tuesday’s 4-2 win at No. 3 Florida State.

·   Redshirt senior Ryan Valdes (Tampa, Fla.) pitched 3.0 innings in his first start since 2015, allowing just one hit against the Noles.

·   The freshman trio of relievers Noah Yager (Davie, Fla.), Carson Ragsdale (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) and Collin Sullivan (Randolph, Mass.) were lights out in their collegiate debuts, combining to toss 4.0 perfect innings with two strikeouts apiece.

·   Along with senior Mark Savarese (Palm City, Fla.) and sophomore Andrew Perez (Orlando, Fla.), the six arms used Tuesday combined to throw USF’s first one-hitter since March 27 of last season.

·   The 3-1 mark is USF’s best four-game start since the 2014 season when they began the year 6-0.

Gotta win on Friday.  That sets it up for the rest of the wkd.  Need to rack up as many wins as possible during this part of the schedule.

Go Bulls!
