Laksa and Henshaw Sweep Weekly Awards

TAMPA, FEB. 13, 2017 – A pair of Bulls picked up both American Athletic Conference weekly awards after a 2-0 week for the University of South Florida women’s basketball team, the league announced Monday. Sophomore forward Kitija Laksa was tabbed Player of the Week and freshman forward Tamara Henshaw brought home Freshman of the Week honors.

Laksa (Riga, Latvia) averaged 27.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game while shooting 57.9 percent in a pair of wins for the Bulls, which included a win over a top-50 RPI Tulane Sunday.

The three-time Player of the Week started the week with her fifth 30-point outing this season, pouring in 34 points at East Carolina, four points shy of her career high. Laksa finished 14-for-22 (.636) and was 4-for-8 from long range. Against Tulane, the sophomore powered the Bulls to a 10-point victory with 21 points, shooting 50 percent (8-for-16).

Henshaw (Palm Coast, Fla.  averaged 9.5 points, 10.0 rebounds, 3.0 blocks and 2.0 assists per game while shooting 75 percent from the floor. Henshaw played a crucial role in the Bulls’ road victory at ECU and tallied her third double-double outing of her career with 11 points and 10 rebounds. The two-time Freshman of the Week only missed one shot (5-of-6) and three assists, two blocks and two steals in a full stat line. Against Tulane, Henshaw just missed her fourth double-double with eight points and 10 rebounds but added a career-high four blocks.

Laksa, Henshaw and the Bulls will get their shot in the War on I-4 rivalry game Tuesday and look to even the score in the all-sports series. UCF currently leads, 18-15. USF will host the Knights in a Valentine’s Day match-up at 7 p.m. at the Sun Dome Arena.
