USF is back at home to host East Carolina on Saturday at 8 p.m.

STORRS, Conn., FEB. 8, 2017 – The University of South Florida men’s basketball team (6-17, 0-12 The American) was defeated 97-51 at UConn (11-12, 6-5) on Wednesday evening.

The Huskies began the game by scoring 17 of the first 18 points, placing the Bulls in an early double-digit hole.

USF drew closer with a 21-7 run, cutting the deficit down to six, 31-25, with 1:59 on the clock. Junior guard Geno Thorpe (Pittsburgh) tallied all eight of his first half points during the stretch.

The Huskies then extended the advantage going into halftime with a 40-30 edge.

UConn then started the second half strong with 17 consecutive points on their way to the double digit win.

Key Stat

· UConn made 16 three-pointers in the contest.

Quotables

Interim head coach Murry Bartow on the game:

“We got off to a bad start, but played phenomenal over the last eight minutes (of the first half) and had a lot of momentum…We just had a terrible start to the second half. I give a lot of credit to UConn – they played well and made a lot of threes.”

Notables

  • Sophomore guard Troy Holston (Queens, N.Y.) posted 10 points, his 21st career game in double figures.

"Drop" does not appear to adequately describe what happened.

We can just use the same headline and insert the opponents name at the end.  This is quite a mess that Harlan has on his hands.  I think even a worse situation than McCullum created.

I feel bad for Bartow because he is just doing what he can.  Harlan is going to need to make a splash hire to begin to build any kind of interest in the program at this point.

With possible sanctions looming a splash hire will be difficult. I think it pretty likely that Bartow is hired to ride this out for a couple years.

Bartow, if he somehow he miraculously turns this team about, say have an above 500 season next year,  should he be made the permanent head coach ?  My thinking is yes .

Anything above .333 record with this program should be considered miraculous. Unfortunately that's not really an exaggeration.

I know a lot of people like the guy, and by all accounts he seems to be a stand-up character. But I'm not seeing much in his ability to figure this thing out. He's been trying to find a good starting combination, but we're obviously still not there yet. Tough time to take over for ANY coach, but my vibe is that Bartow won't work out.
