The Huskies began the game by scoring 17 of the first 18 points, placing the Bulls in an early double-digit hole. USF drew closer with a 21-7 run, cutting the deficit down to six, 31-25, with 1:59 on the clock. Junior guard Geno Thorpe (Pittsburgh) tallied all eight of his first half points during the stretch. The Huskies then extended the advantage going into halftime with a 40-30 edge. UConn then started the second half strong with 17 consecutive points on their way to the double digit win. Key Stat · UConn made 16 three-pointers in the contest. Quotables Interim head coach Murry Bartow on the game: “We got off to a bad start, but played phenomenal over the last eight minutes (of the first half) and had a lot of momentum…We just had a terrible start to the second half. I give a lot of credit to UConn – they played well and made a lot of threes.” Notables Thorpe finished with 11 points, his 15th double figure game this season. Sophomore guard Troy Holston (Queens, N.Y.) posted 10 points, his 21st career game in double figures. On Sunday, USF made seven, three pointers, giving the team 19 this month. This is quite a mess that Harlan has on his hands. I think even a worse situation than McCullum created. I feel bad for Bartow because he is just doing what he can. My thinking is yes . I know a lot of people like the guy, and by all accounts he seems to be a stand-up character. But I'm not seeing much in his ability to figure this thing out. He's been trying to find a good starting combination, but we're obviously still not there yet. Tough time to take over for ANY coach, but my vibe is that Bartow won't work out.
