TAMPA, Fla. — Despite disgruntled boosters spouting off to reporters about him and multiple premature reports of his demise, Charlie Strong insists he never got upset at Texas over his dismissal last November. He knows he simply didn’t win enough games to merit a fourth season.

He did, however, get upset with himself.

“When you’re the first minority coach at a major university like that, you feel like there’s so many people counting on you,” Strong said during a recent interview at his new employer, USF. “I got upset at myself for not being successful, and I got upset at myself because you feel like you let a lot of people down. There are only so many African-American coaches, so when you get on a stage like that …”

Last season, there were just 14 black coaches among the 128 FBS schools. Two, Strong and Purdue’s Darrell Hazell, lost their jobs. Of the 21 schools that had job openings this cycle, 10 hired first-time head coaches. Only one, Nevada’s Jay Norvell, was black.

From the three outdoor practice fields to the sparkling locker room to the massive weight room with a nutrition bar, USF’s facilities look no different than those of a typical Power 5 school.

Dam straight! Jim built it the right way!

"An offensive staff that went 5-7 last season and lost to Kansas takes over a team with New Year's Six expectations."

It feels like the program is on the verge of big things, and I have high hopes for what Strong can do here, but that Texas thing remains in the back of my mind. This job will not be without pressure for him. Another 11-2 season in 2017 won't be good enough for part of our fan base.

I think CCS will catch a little more slack than if CWT had gone 11-2 in 2017. That part of our fan base would have been howling ...

Yin & yang, brother. There's another part of our fan base that would consider 5-7 acceptable for his first year.

But he will absolutely feel pressure to get this talented O back to a postseason game.

The "pressure" at USF is not compatible to the pressure at UT.

At UT, the boosters OWN the program and demand tons of off-the-field junk from their coaches. They also have the (no longer realistic?) belief that they should be a top 5 program every year. At UT you are a failure as a coach unless you win  10 games every year and bow down to rich morons is cowboy boots weekly. Then, on top of the crazy expectations and boosters, you have to deal with the school owning its own TV network. It's a horrible job (but the money is great).

At USF, all you need to do is win some games and smile for the cameras.

What did he have to do with building the Frank Morsani Football Complex?

He got us to #2 in the nation.
