No. 22 USF Hosts Tulsa Saturday in Uniendo Los Toros Event

TAMPA, JAN. 6, 2016 – It’s been close to one year since the University of South Florida women’s basketball team lost in the Sun Dome Arena and the No. 22 Bulls look to extend their home win-streak to 12 games Saturday. USF hosts Tulsa in its second Uniendo Los Toros event at 7 p.m. The game will air on ESPN3.

USF (12-1, 1-0 The American) returns to Tampa after winning its conference opener at Tulane Wednesday. The Bulls downed the Green Wave, 62-53, in a top-40 RPI match-up. Junior Maria Jespersen (Arhus, Denmark) turned in her third-straight double-double. Jespersen notched 13 points and 12 rebounds in the win and became the first player since Courtney Williams to turn in three consecutive double-doubles last season.

Laia Flores (Mataro, Spain) continues to guide a Bulls offense that averages 78.6 points per game. Flores averages 6.9 assists per game, which rank 14th in NCAA Division I, but her 3.91 assist/turnover ratio leads the country.

Promotions

It is USF’s annual Uniendo Los Toros game, which in English translates to “Uniting The Bulls.” The first 300 fans will receive a LOS TOROS t-shirt at Gate A.

In addition, the first 100 students at the game will receive free pizza in the Coke Student Club.

The Opponent

USF and the Tulsa will meet for just the third time in program history. The Bulls hold a 2-0 series advantage and won their only meeting in Tampa 79-46, Feb. 18, 2015. USF defeated Tulsa, 72-66, in Oklahoma last season.

Tulsa (5-10, 1-1 The American) defeated Memphis, 57-52, Wednesday for its first conference win. The Golden Hurricane are led by Erika Wakefield with 13.1 points per game. Wakefield is the only player to average double-figures and the Golden Hurricane average 65.4 points per game. Tulsa ranks 43rd in the nation in three-point field goals made (108).

Notables

· The Bulls are 31-4 in the Sun Dome over the past three seasons, and currently hold an 11-game home win streak.

· Sophomore Kitija Laksa (Riga, Latvia) averages a league best 20.4 points per game which rank 18th in Division I, but she is one of only six sophomores on the top-20 scorers list.

· Head coach Jose Fernandez is only three wins away from reaching 300 career wins. Only two active coaches in the American Athletic Conference have achieved the feat.

· USF has a rebounding margin of +14.4, which ranks third in the country. The Bulls average 45.9 rebounds per game.

· The Bulls’ 129 points versus Saint Francis U (Dec. 14) are the second-most points scored by any team in Division I this season. Baylor turned in 140 points the next day, Dec. 15, against Winthrop.

· In her 36th game as a Bull, Laksa reached 500 career points, joining Jessica Dickson, Wanda Guyton and Angie Snyder as the fastest players in program history to reach the mark. Dickson reached 500 points her freshman season in 29 games, while it took Guyton 32 games. Laksa tied Snyder in 36 games, both reaching 500 points as sophomores.

· USF’s 16 three-pointers against FIU (Nov. 30) are the most three-pointers of any team in the American Athletic Conference this season. The top mark in conference history is 18 set by UConn at UC Davis on Nov. 14, 2014. The 16 three-pointers list second in The American history.

· USF is the only team in NCAA Division I with nine international players on its roster.

Up 13 at the half, started out slow again there at the beginning. Hope we don't start slow on Tuesday.
