Anyone know where we ranked when Judy took over?  The growth in the In University has been truly amazing under her leadership.

Judy was appointed in 2000. Added the sisters to the east as a comparison:

2000:

University of South Florida - #54   $145,397

University of C. Florida - #139   $47,646

2015:

University of South Florida - #25   $488,641

University of C. Florida - #72   $185,555

To be fair, their rise has also been quite impressive.

This is a big accomplishment, but what has come from all of the research? Has USF developed or discovered anything groundbreaking? Are they close to a breakthrough with anything? I'm asking because I simply don't know.

Exactly...

and it cost them a lot less...

Also, she is paid more than most AAU school presidents. Let that one sink in...

It doesn't cost them "a lot less" in any measure relevant to university budgets. I have no idea if Judy earns her pay or not - seems to be doing a fine job and I trust the board understands the compensation environment. That being said when you go to hire an executive team for an up and coming institution you should generally expect to pay more than many established businesses. There is hire risk, hire expectations, and more work involved. How much energy do you suspect MIT's president expends in getting top tier high school students to apply? How about top tier employers to partner?

It's clear when other USF faculty complain about garbage wages -- compared to other institutions

How much more do you suppose USF faculty would earn if we paid Judy $0 and divided it across them all? I have no idea if USF faculty is well compensated - they seem compotent and so I'd presume they are fairly compensated else they'd seek employment opportunities elsewhere. But one thing has absolutely nothing to do with the other.

In fields I am familiar with faculty positions primarily provide the stability for one to then thrive in their funded research (see top 25 status on this thread). Thus most faculty salaries are based on assumption that additional research dollars are being earned.
