USF ATHLETICS GoUSFBulls.com FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE DATE: Monday, April 8, 2024 CONTACT: Andrew Gapinski STORY South Florida Pulls Mama Dembele And Ines Piper From Transfer Portal Tampa, Fla. – April 8, 2024 – South Florida women’s basketball head coach Jose Fernandez announced the addition of transfers Mama Dembele and Ines Piper on Monday afternoon. The duo will join the Bulls for the upcoming 2024-25 campaign and joins the incoming freshman class of Amy Thompson and Yana Karamfilova. Dembele, who is ranked as the ninth transfer in the nation by ESPN, comes to Tampa Bay after four successful years at Missouri. This past year, the 5’6 guard was named the 2023-24 SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year, selected to the All-SEC Defensive Team, and earned a spot on the CSC Academic All-District squad. During the 2023-24 season at Missouri, Dembele, collared a triple-double, five double-doubles, and logged 18 double-digit scoring performances. Her triple-double was a 15-point, 11-rebound, and 11-assist performance against Auburn (Feb. 11). The Manlleu, Spain native also had six games with five-plus steals, 14 games with five or more assists, and five 10-plus assist performances. She finished the year ranked sixth nationally with an average of 6.5 assists per game and 3.3 steals per contest. Coach Fernandez on Dembele: "After playing in the SEC for the last 4 years, Mama (Dembele) brings a wealth of experience to our program. Not only did she lead her team in assists, but she was also a force on the defensive end earning her a spot on the All-SEC Defensive Team." Piper heads to Tampa Bay after two years at Temple. This past season the 6’0 forward started 23 games and appeared in 32 contests for Temple. She logged nine double-digit scoring performances, had three double-figure rebound games, and collared a pair of double-doubles throughout the year. The Paris, France native put up her first career double-double with 15 points and a personal-best 11 rebounds in the season opener against Delaware St. (Nov. 6). Her second double-double of the season was a personal-best 16 points and 10 boards against UPenn (Dec. 10). Before her time at Temple, Ines spent two years at Northwest Florida State College, where she helped her squad to a NJCAA National Championship in 2020-21 and was an All-Panhandle Second Team selection. Coach Fernandez on Piper: "As an international player, Ines (Piper) fits our style of play at USF. With her combined athleticism and experience she will give us another threat at the four spot."

Coach Fernandez will make his assistant coaching debut for USA Basketball after serving as a court coach in 2018 for the U18 National Team Trials. “I’m humbled and grateful for the opportunity to work alongside two unbelievable coaches and to be a part of a journey with incredible student-athletes in the pursuit of a gold medal this summer,” said Coach Fernandez. KATHY DELANEY-SMITH MID-MAJOR COACH OF THE YEAR AWARD Delaney-Smith’s Harvard teams compiled a record of 630-434 (.592) in her 40-year career, including a 367-168 (.685) record in Ivy League play. Delaney-Smith’s 630 wins rank 29th in Division I history, and ninth among coaches who spent their entire career with a single team. Delaney-Smith led her teams to six NCAA Tournament appearances and nine WNIT appearances, plus three Ivy League titles before the NCAA Tournament awarded automatic bids to the Ivy League champion. She has coached eight Ivy League Player of the Year recipients, six Ivy League Rookie of the Year winners, and all 21 of Harvard’s 1,000-point scorers in program history. Delaney-Smith was inducted into the Massachusetts Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame in 1986, becoming the first woman to ever be inducted, with more than three decades of her career still ahead of her. She was also inducted into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame in 2003. A native of Newton, Mass., Delaney-Smith is also among the most accomplished high school players and coaches in the state’s history. She was the first woman in state history to score 1,000 points while at Sacred Heart High School. As a high school coach, Delaney-Smith coached Westwood High School to an overall record of 204-31 across 11 seasons, including a 96-game winning streak. Oct. 25, 2023 – University of South Florida senior guard Sammie Puisis is one of 25 players named to the 2024 Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year preseason watch list presented by Her Hoop Stats, the organization announced Wednesday. Puisis averaged 15.5 ppg and 4.1 rpg last season while starting 33-of-34 contests. The Mason, Ohio native put up double-figures in all but five contests and had 11 20-plus point outings. She finished the 2022-23 season with 109 3-point field goals made, the third most in a single season in program history and fifth all-time in the American Athletic Conference (AAC). Puisis finished last season ranked fifth nationally in three-point field goals per game (3.21) and total three-pointers made (109). Entering the upcoming campaign, Puisis was named to the 2024 Ann Meyers-Drysdale preseason watch list and was an AAC Preseason All-Conference First Team selection. BECKY HAMMON MID-MAJOR PLAYER OF THE YEAR AWARD Hammon was a three-time All-American during her career at Colorado State and led the Rams to the Sweet 16 in 1999, the program’s only appearance to date. She was signed by the New York Liberty in 1999 and was traded to the San Antonio Stars in 2007, where she played the rest of her career. Hammon retired in 2014 as a six-time All-Star and a two-time All-WNBA First Team honoree. In 2016 she was named one of the top 20 players in WNBA history and was recently named to the W25. Hammon became the second female coach in NBA history when she began coaching for the San Antonio Spurs in 2014. Additionally, Hammon is the only woman to be a head coach in the NBA Summer League as well as the only woman to be a member of an NBA All-Star coaching staff. Currently, Hammon is the head coach of the Las Vegas Aces and won the 2022 and 2023 WNBA Championships. This year's scheduling model features 18 contests, an expansion from the previous 16-game slate. Each conference member will play five of its 13 opponents twice, while facing eight opponents a single time, split between four home and four road matchups. The league slate is highlighted with a trio of linear games, two of which will be played at the Yuengling Center (Charlotte, Jan. 3, & East Carolina, Jan. 28).
